    Default Bearing direction

I have some bent bearing shields that are slowing the spin. Can I just remove the shields and have the open side facing inside the wheel?

Of course you can. I use Biltin bearings and they are open on one side. The plus side of doing this is it makes cleaning your bearings super easy.

    I can confirm this.

I pull all sealed bearings apart, leaving one shield on. I prefer packing them with WLG.

what's the best way to get shields off?

I recently got a bunch of bearings that are all double sealed (no shields), what's the best way to pry them apart?

    contradicting?

shields will usually have a c-clip to remove first... rubber seals I just use a needle/paperclip and pry them out.

To tell you the truth, I use a sharp can opener. I carefully poke a hole and pry it out. Tweezers, needles, knives, tine screw drivers, and ice picks take forever. I just slash at it... but you MUST BE CAREFUL! You can snag the inside retainer and fuck it all up if you aren't careful that way.

Xacto knives and mini screwdrivers are the safe way, but it's hard. You gotta pry at the metal caps you see touching the outside race.

I've snagged a retainer my 10mm bearings. (DOH!) I just bent the retainer back into shape and tuned it. You'd never notice it. They still ride good. P use WLG too, so I wouldn't suggest thin oils on single shield, metal retainer bearings.

put your thumb over one side of the c-clip, and put a needle or something with a very fine point between the outer race and the clip. Just watch for it flying out...
