Wheels don't make any sounds when sliding after I washed them with water.
I have Lime BigZigs on my Dervish and when I use to slide they would be very loud as any wheel would. My wheels were picking up alot of dust the other day and decided to take them off my board and wash them with some warm water. I let them dry and then put them back on my board and start sliding again but this time, there was no noise. It was silent as the back end of my board slide around which was really strange. I waited another day and tried again but its still very quiet compared to before. If I push it hard enough it will make a little noise but nowhere as loud as before.
This is very strange because my friend also washed his Orangatang InHeats the same way I did and his wheels are still as loud as they ever were.
Does anyone know whats going on here? Thanks

I want to know why this matters. Do they slide any worse? Or better?

What probably happened is that you tightened your wheels tighter to the axles, thus eliminating play in them when you put them on the 2nd time around. Your buddy with the Otangs probably doesn't have spacers (maybe I'm wrong and he just has them on loose).
Also, I would describe the Retro urethane to be: Oily in ride characteristic, while the Orangatang would be more: sugary or grippy. As well, the Orangatangs were sold with a smaller core quite recently (though now it's beefed up a ton which is WAY better) and that made them a bit chattery for a run.
Everyone needs to realize that you gain NOTHING from having that bit of play in your wheels. Get strong spacers and TIGHTEN YOUR WHEELS TILL YOU CAN'T ANYMORE.

was it smoother or just quieter

When I slide now its much smoother, like there is a coating of dust on the wheels. When they made noise I could feel the wheel breaking traction with the pavement as they made noise. Now its just like they slide around unpredictably. I'll try loosening them, I think I may have over tightened them.

Read what K-Rimes posted a few posts above yours. Read it and learn from it.
I used to have other hobbies. Now I skate.

I noticed something very similar to this when I replaced my randals with aeras. Suddenly, my purple stimulus wheels that were super chattery before became ultra buttery smooth in slides. At first I thought it was because of the straight axles, but after reading Kevin's post I think that having (precision) spacers and tight wheels made all the difference. I have my wheels tightened right the #### down and there is no play at all. The slides are soooooo smooth!

Do you notice your ride being slower after the wheels are tightened down so much?

Because I have never seen a man can stand slide smoothly in slowly speed without Orangatang.

If your spacers don't suck and if your wheel hub is a good size (you have like a 50% chance of that happening) then you see no difference. Most of my wheels do slow down, and I only feel that sluggishness on flatground, when i'm going down a hill, it doesn't matter.

no. i tighten my wheels to the point where there is no play and just before i notice that spin starts to slow down. sometimes a little tiny bit past that. then i grab the wheel with my hand and twist it around a bit (forward and backward and side-to-side), making sure everything is fitting nice and tight. seems to work like a charm!
maybe kevin can explain how to tighten down a nut as hard as you can without causing so much pressure that your bearing slows down...

How long bearings bearings spin has nothing to do with how the do under load.

You don't need K-Rimes to tell you that you need spacers.

Wow, my friend told me (even with spacers) to leave a little play in the wheels. He's a moron, I'm gonna go fix that now.

Re: Wheels don't make any sounds when sliding after I washed them with water.
Loose wheels will sound chattery, tight ones won't.
And setting the nuts so your bearings spin for a long time unloaded does not make one bit of difference once you step on the deck and load the bearings. Matter of fact it's worse, because you are deliberately opening the tolerances of the parts involved and making things loose on purpose.
Those spacers are 'sposed to be in between your bearings, so you can tighten the inner races against it. Speed rings outside the bearings, spacers inside. Then the speed rings bear against the outsides of the bearing races, and the spacers bear on the insides, so the whole assembly has the proper tolerances. This will also help shore up a weak core, the spacer helps the core carry side loads.
Play in your wheels is not good - learn it, know it, live it. I don't know about cranking them down till you can't go any further (I have made bearings bind by overtightening myself) but they should at least be tight to the point where when you grab a wheel and twist it in all directions, you feel NO play in the assembly...

Now I tighten it down all the way, then crank it back half a rotation so its on good, but not too tight. Slides are much quieter now, thanks!

Re: Wheels don't make any sounds when sliding after I washed them with water.
It's possible to kill most spacers - and even pull some axles loose by over-tightening your wheels.
Tight does not mean cranked. Unless you're spacers are a good steel and fit your wheels, which have quite high tolerances.
