Noob question,

but how do you clean bearings without one of these?

Just put acetate/isowhatever in a bowl and let em soak for like 2 hours before lubing?

ive been using seventy something percent isopropyl alcohol for about 3 years now and i havent had any problems. i just make sure to dry them fast after i've cleaned them

you can make your own, or buy one, alot of companies make bearings cleaners, they use a different method, shake in stead of pump, same principal, just rons pump method will get them cleaner.

Better to put them in a jelly or mayonnaise jar partially filled with acetone/whatever and shake them for a couple of minutes.

yeah mines made out of a mayo jar

but im looking for something slimmer, too much room in the mayo jar for the cleaning substance to slosh around, not very efficient

lol... i just fill a shotglass halfway with acetone and smack a bearing around in there (no shield of course) until it's clean.

I use a Bones bearing cleaning unit... bought it for $5. had it for probably 10 years. You can easily duplicate their design for a couple of bucks...maybe even free depending on what's lying around in your home. I know there's a few threads detailing how to make one around here some where. Though truthfully, if you see one, you won't need instructions, they are easy to make.

I use aerosol brake cleaner from the auto parts store. By spraying on an angle through the bearing after you pop off both covers, you can spin the bearing with the cleaner while you are cleaning and degreasing it. Also, this cleaner evaporates quickly so you can relube and be ready to roll in 5-10 minutes.
