Re: Vaseline as bearing lube?
vaseline is too viscous, slow down the bearings, and trap dirt more easily.
I use gun lube for my bearings and it works well. I would recommend a light gun oil of some sort if you can't get your hands on some speed cream or similar substance.

Re: Vaseline as bearing lube?
bearing oil/machine oil is not super rare I don't think.
Is there a weight number for gun/machine oils that people could use to determine if they are similar to skate brands bearing lube?

Not sure on numbers but I don't think the majority of people use skate brand lube.

Really?
What non-skate-brand lubes are popular? I know some people prefer white lithium grease, but aside from that, what else?

as long as your not trying to set any downhill speed records they should be fine.

rust = very bad
I'm not sure about this, but i think any rust in your bearing and you should chuck them
-
Re: Vaseline as bearing lube?
not really necessary. extreme rust is bad and will cause your bearing to break easier, but a little rust isnt bad.
the exception to this is for downhill. rusted bearings over heat quickly and it can lead to some dangerous moments.

Re: Vaseline as bearing lube?
Just go and get some bones reds, instead of spending $5 on a can of oil spend $15 on new bearings. Also while you're there pickup a bottle of bones speed lube. Works wonders.

Re: Vaseline as bearing lube?
Virtually any very light weight oil. Steer clear of using things such as WD40 etc. You want a true lubricant. Hell, in a pinch simple motor oil will work better than some previously mentioned. You just want it light weight(thin)
