    Default Wheel Questions

    1) i see my wheels are starting to cone out a bit, and i thought why not reverse the wheel? I know it wouldnt ride the same, but are there any fatal mistakes to doing that?

    2) when should i rotate my wheels? i ride every weekend and do a bit of sliding, dancing, cruising, and downhill

    Thanks

    What is your setup?

You can try and flip your wheels to check for clearance, if it works take it for a ride and you decide.

Wouldn't you only be able to do this with centerset wheels ?

I have a similar question about reducing wear... i feel like me rear wheels are wearing more than my front wheels 1. is this typical or am i imagining things ? and 2. would moving them to the front fix/reduce this ?

    Thanks !

That's good advice, you should keep it on ice.

I have Purp durians from otang (83a) with a dervish and paris carving trucks.

clearance isnt a problem, i dont think i could have wheel bite if i tried. i've had my wheels since december and you can see a faint "cone" to them. is this about right?

Fast speeds + sudden stops = Quick coning

I wish the runs in my town had better run-outs, I'm doing shutdowns at +35mph and it's killing my wheels

    Related question:

The usual advice is to rotate your wheels in an "X", but on a symmetrical board, wouldn't it make more sense to rotate the wheels normally? (Like, swap the wheels on the same hanger.)

I thought about that to, and swapping the wheels on the same hanger does make sense. If my observations are correct, the heel-side back wheel gets the most abuse. When doing a Coleman that wheel has the weight on it and is dragged first. Rotating in the X pattern assures that the most used wheels are in the same relative position. Switching wheels on the same hanger, switch heel-side, or toe-side slides would even out the wear. That or I'm talking out my ass.-

What I usually do is take them all off, throw them on the floor, kick them around a bit, then gather them up, in a random fashion, that way I assure a randomly even wear over the life of the wheel.

But yes, swapping them from side to side and not in X works well also.

since this is a "wheel questions" topic i thought i'd ask a few questions.

i got abec 11 flywheels about 3 weeks ago and i have been riding a LOT just point A to point B. how long do i have to ride them to break them in before sliding?

    thanks in advance

You know a wheel is broken in cause the shiney mold release has come off. How long depends on how offten your ide and whatnot.

I just realised my back heelside wheels on my dervish are starting to cone noticably so I switched them on the hangar. Moving them in an X does'nt make any difference on a symetrical board.

SEARCH GODDAMMIT! haha na i dont care, heres what you are looking for

STEP 1 Ride your wheels for a good hour or 5-10 miles carving, pumping, going fast but not trying to slide them. Get to know the wheel, talk to it maybe even buy it some lunch. You goal is to wear away the shiny oily top layer of the wheel. If you slide your wheels right out of the box it can cause them to wear weird, etc.

STEP 2 Once the shiny layer is gone and the wheel has some wear and slight texture to the touch start doing hard carves and slight speed checks. The wheels are going to slide choppy and all over the place at first be prepared for this. If you can’t get the wheel to slide, work on those sliding skills baby. Each time down the hill while trying to slide they will slide smoother and smoother. This is a slow process be patient.

What you are basically doing is rounding the outside edge of the wheel, this will enable it to slide better.

STEP 3 Start working in more technical slides, 180’s and colemans. Make sure when you are coleman-sliding wheels that are not broken in to keep your weight further back, the wheels will not slide as easy and may want to toss you off.

STEP 4 With patience and persistent you will feel your wheels slide like butter while still maintaining grip when you want.

Ideally do not slide your wheels on super rough roads this will make them wear faster.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO BREAK MY WHEELS IN FOR SLIDING? I skated a step hill 10 times doing at least 8 slides down the hill each time. After this period of time the wheels were broken in for sliding and the choppiness was gone. Be persistent, breaking in time will vary with the style of riding you do and your skill level.

See what a nice guy I am for typing all that out!
