Default whats going on with the grippins?

i know this is a very crude drawing, but anyways...

how does the grippin really work? is it completely flat, like in picture2 and gripping with the help of extra urathane deepness near each side of the central core, or is it sort of arched like in picture 1, getting grip with the help of flexible edges that flex out under weight?. by the way the pictures on top are with no weight on the board. the arrows are pointing to the main sources of grip
hey yo son that's my name whats the word?

its probably flat, until you put the weight on it... when you put weight on it itll comperss a little bit... take one of the wheels in your hands and squeeze the outter part of the wheel not near the core... youll see that it goes inward and squishes.... that squish = grip... and im gonna make mac and cheese

It's version two in your photos: the wheels are molded with a flat running surface, not a cupped one. I think Chris Chaput's idea with the design of that wheel wasn't to address grip when facing vertical forces, as you've depicted, but rather when needing to deal with lateral forces, as he references below in his diagram of how he thinks the Grippin "works".
