What are you looking for in freeride wheels
We are doing research for freeride wheels and we want to know SF's opinions on bearing placement, contact patch, height, what don't/do you like about your wheels now, and how do your wheels wear?

Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
Sideset seems to slide the smoothest i think, but centerset wheels can be flipped around. My favorite freeride wheels are 81a flashbacks. Sad thing is that all good freeride wheels die quickly.
At the top of a hill at a very rapid speed there's only one place to go.
At the top of a hill at a very high speed there's nowhere to go but down.

Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
I'm looking for a freeride wheel that has the ability to be flipped and ride consistently, like a centerset wheel, but also has the beautiful slide characteristics of a sideset wheel.
I'm looking for a wheel that will last me years and years of heavy sliding every day, but will still leave thane lines fatter than Fat Albert.
I am ultimately looking for a wheel that defies all preconceptions of what a wheel is, that blows your mind, and breaks the laws of physics.

Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
narrow centerset wheel, 60mm 65mm 70mm 75mm, abec ish thane, an earthwing ish core (slide a style) and a softish duro because of how rough the core makes the ride.
that seems like it would be fun.
why yes, my avatar is a picture of sector 9 ceramic bearings. why isn't yours? please neg rep me if you haven't already.
I HAVE LOTS AND LOTS OF FICTIONAL SKATEBOARDS. THEY ARE AS FOLLOWS:

Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
If Fat Frees were center set then they would be perfect.
-
Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
I want wheels that are absorbent, so I can soak them in gasoline and set them on fire while I charge the hill.
.
Why are you reading my sig? It's boring.

Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
Super tight cores, center-set, 70mm-75mm, rounded lips, shape that wears well (no hour glass shapes).
-
Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
centerset, slippery, round lips, FAST THANE, sick thane lines, small core/lots of urathane to burn, don't flat spot easy, progressive not icy slide, still able to hold a line if I want it to.
Basically snowballs with smaller cores and more urathane, little wider contact patch, with fireball's thane, with the anti-flat spot abilities of a raceform or something.
edit, also cult classics wear amazing. something like that would be key.

Centerset Snowballs.
That's all I want.

cult classics have owned me in the past week. before that it was fat frees and stimulus.. which still rule. Heshers are fun, but really have literally no grip
I have a bunch of skateboards
Isn't this what you're supposed to put in a signature?

Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
I think it all depends on what I want to do on a board. I love my retro freerides for their ability to grip and smooth slides, I love my durians for their speed and long slides...
If they made a 70-72mm wheel that had some grip for pushing, carving, and some sliding I would like it. (like retro freerides)
If they made a ~75mm wheel for just sliding I would like it. (like herschers, durians, etc.)
Ultimately I think if you want to make a new awesome wheel you should make it unique.

yea, cheaper is better, freeride wheels die quick. definitely 70mm+, rounded lips, stone ground is nice but not necessary, maybe offer the exact same thane in center and side set?

70mm (ish) fireball beasts would be great. I dig the hub setting and the lip shape, but 76mm has wheelbite written all over my Comet freeride setup.

Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
A nice and easy break into sliding, and then a nice hook up. A smooth slide, and centerset would be sweet.
-
Re: What are you looking for in freeride wheels
A softer, sideset wheel that isnt over 75mm or under 65mm, small contact patch.

75a abec11 urethane in the 70mm Sector9 raceformula shape and core. I think that would be the best freeride wheel ever.

And one of the easiest to kill. This would be awesome though. I'm riding some 70mm 75a nineballs and they're basically the wheel that you described. Soooo smooth. Not too sluggish either. sick!

I saw a photo a while back of some prototype 70mm fireballs. Just saying...
