Default 90+ mm wheels too large for "regular" boarding?

I ordered a Swift 42 and emailed Scott about some wheel wells. He responded and that was taken care of but he mentioned that my Gumballs were actually the smallest wheels he recommends due to a 2" drop of the board.

I had already been toying with the idea to get some large 90 or 97mm Flywheels. However I've seen here that a lot of people are talking about bending axles when running large diameter wheels.

If I were just going to use this setup to DH I wouldn't be as worried. But I'm going to be using this board as an all around board so I'll be cruising it and carving pretty hard.

Just wondered. Oh and BTW anyone running Holey? That's what I'm putting on this board as well. I'm wondering how they compare height wise with say Randal II's?

Why not try 83mm Fly's? Also, the Swift 42's seem to handle better (for all-around) use with a little more height than you'd think. For example, for carving, garage riding, etc, my 42 works much better with Randals and ~1/4" of risers.

I've actually got my Subsonic Highland 42 set up with 1/2" risers, crails and 83mm flywheels...its amazing....and very fast.

I'm ordering a set of 90's for my EVO now that the 42 has highjacked it's wheels

Well I had actually talked to Chaput about the Fly's and wanted something large but still had the same amount (or close to) of urethane between the hub an the ground as my silky smooth Gumballs do.

90mm Fly's have 22.5mm which is just slightly below the Gumballs at 25.5 Actually 97 mm FW's have slightly more at 26mm. 83's have 18mm's which maybe fine but I want as much "rubber" between me and what passes for paved roads here. Hence my desire for larger wheels, not to mention the added speed.

seriously...if you wanna get flys...get the 83mm...the 97mm is way too big. save money and just upgrade your bearings to ceramics if you wanna go faster.

Yah I'd have to agree there. The 83's are big, but not unwieldy. I use them on my new cruiser, the Skurf-stringer Romulus

It is a sweet cruiser wheel. Gets looks from people too. Today I rode by some shortboarders holding their boards while walking uphill, and I just come pumping uphill (i was pushing the whole way, but I thought some pumping might impress the wee ones.... what.... don't look at me like that... you're saying you don't try and impress people? **** you...) and I hear the common "woah... look at those wheels, wtf are those?"

    ahhh, the ignorance of youth!

Well the consensus seems like 83's are the way to go. I guess I'll just stick with the Gumballs for now. There's really not that much difference in height to warrant new wheels. Plus the actual height of urethane between the hub and the wheel is significantly less with the 83's.

Might be something I'll look at when I really need new wheels though.

    Thanks guys.

You can't pump uphill? Well certainly not on that board.

    Hey r_matt,

I don't remember where I saw it but just yesterday I saw that they're lower. Looks like they're perfect. I'm so stoked to have ordered them. I got a email from Lush and they've shipped out and Royal Mail said they've been passed over to overseas postal for delivery. So I guess it won't be long!

OK.......... why not the 90mm flys?

I`ve been wanting to try some really big wheels for awhile. What sort of boards are the 90 and 97mm flys made for?

I would have thought the Highland 42" with 90mm flys would rock. 8)

yah, but that hub is huge! You difference in speed between a hubbed and non-hubbed wheel is gigantic.
