You don't have to take them apart every time you clean them. Just soak them and agitate them around in the cleaning solution. I suppose if they were in horrible shape you might want to take them completely apart but if you keep them clean you shouldn't have to ever do that.

The backside of the bearings are open. That's why you want to shake them around.... so the stuff will come out the back.

They come on a bolt that makes a perfect "hanger" to use. You just put them on the bolt with the open side of the bearing facing down and put it in you cleaning solution.

There's a $1.25 bearing cleaner here on the Fish you can use:

you have to make them yourself

you buy cheap ceramics (ask ebasil) and take out the balls and replace the balls of the builtins with the ceramic ones

The 7's are smoother. Worth the extra bucks.

Bones Swiss were designed long before longboarding became mainstream (yes, mainstream). If you want max acceleration in the shortest distance/time, they're a good choice. If, however, you're using larger wheels, and/or cranking hard turns, etc, the Biltins are--IMO--a better choice.

BTW, I never take the shields off when I clean Biltins. I use a Bones Cleaning Unit, and just shake them in mineral spirits. Works like a charm.

...I went to Home Depot and got a plastic pint container in the paint aisle..it comes with a lid. I fill it 1-2 inches (depends on how many bearings I am cleaning at a time) with spirits and then agitate. To dry (and to get any other loose grit out) I use air in a can you get for your computer keyboards. (cheaper at Sam's or Costco but you get more than one) Also your Biltin's come in a nice container with a bolt to hold them. I am sure you can make an inexpensive washer using that.
Don't forget to get some latex or non- latex gloves so the girlfriends dont complain that your hands got chapped from chemicals. And those of you who dont have girlfriends...well you already know that YOU dont want chapped hands either. (You know what I am saying..!!)
