Looks like they would be pretty good if you skate in the rain a lot.

I thought full ceramics were for applications where harsh chemicals in machinery might contact them ... I mean really?

    no, honestly ...

i know two sets of bearings:

    - bones mini logo @ EUR 10 / set
    - pleasuretool ceramics shielded @ EUR 30 / set

(and there is PLENTY to buy in between in europe)

the minilogos and the pt shielded have a step on the inner run to keep the dirt out.
the minilogos are fast from the first sec. -- the pt need some (2-3 dh days) sessions to unfold their full potential and are my life insurance if they would run dry.

    don´t believe the hype.

    pps
what you want is silizium nitride (black balls) and not zirconiom oxide (white).
there are those (as pictured) full ceramic bearings but they are NOT faster but mybe more durable in a machine that works 24/7 for months at a rpm nobody will ever achieve with skateboard wheels. (period)

ps. the pt sealed suck! they are NOT easier to maintain IMO. (and the seals are too soft)

the most money I have ever spent on bearings was 16.00 at the local shop for some abec 5 "skate marketed" bearings. they sucked. they wore to the point of being silly sloppy in a few months. I replaced a set of 70's NMB's with those bearings, which were still riding fine when I switched them. I just wanted to freshen them up. I said never again.

I tried out the PT 3's and 5's, and was completely satisfied.

Now, I buy PT 3's with seals. I do not do any maintanance on them (except as written below). they last me about 6mos to 1yr of heavy bowl/tranny riding, then I put a new set in. I clean up the old ones, relube them and put them on my 70's retro cruisers or my kids boards. I have toyed with Ron's, but I really have no issues with speed. I pump fine, have no problems in any terrain, and I dont race competitively. I simply dont need or justify a higher end bearing. I am asked all the time what sort of wheels and bearings I have, but its all in the utilization of the terrain and pumping.

I did my one of senior engineering design papers on ceramics. At the time mid-late 80's they were just really starting to make it into the specialized markets. ceramics and powder metals. the price is high for the average skater, but for the big industry its not. they are likely pretty sporty performance, but I dont feel that I need it.
My comments represent a selfishly one sided 1970's skateboarder mindset, and do not reflect the current fashion-skate-lifestyle industry's views.

Would these not smash up real easily? I know I've seen some pysics stuff about how a perfectly round surface can make brittle materials very hard (like marbles), but won't the races on these bad boys just snap?

I bought me two bearings a year ago to test them (32€ = 43$ each).

In the rain they are the #### but at dry conditions they get dirty into seconds and you have to clean them after every ride. The road filth will be crushed to powder by the balls, but it will stay inside the running surfaces. You can lube them with water which makes them spinning way longer, but the water evaporates fast.

My bearings came without any seal, but im sure, with a seal they are not better.

This bearing will make you nothing faster, even slover on a long run.

They are definetaly not worth the money and now i use them as paperweight. Expensive Lession learned.
