Default Wheel and Truck advice needed

    Hey all!
I'm a noob longboarder and I have stock Sector 9 Golden Lefts, it's a 46x9.6in board with Gullwing M1 trucks, risers and 61mm wheels.

I would like to get larger wheels like Grippins, perhaps even Speed Vents but should I need to get new trucks to go along with them? I'm not sure if by getting a larger wheel, would they stick out too far along the board and so need a new set of trucks?

I'm about 200lbs, and only want to use my board for cruising the streets and boardwalk, so I'm open to recommendations to both the wheels and trucks. Thanks!

    Alvin

If you just want to cruise you should get 70- 78mm wheels because the bigger the wheels the longer the cruise time will be, and you probably wont need to change your trucks

If its got risers then some gumballs would be good. They are really good starter wheels. For trucks if you are planning on bombin a lot of hills then randals or crails would be a good way to go but if you use it for a lot of just skatin around then you should check out Trackers.

Hey guys thanks for the advice!

Is there a way to find out how wide the trucks should be in relation of the width of the board and the wheels? I would like to have the wheels not extend out from the board.

    Thanks everyone!!

Well, if the truck/wheel combo right now is the right width, measure from the outside of one wheel to the outside of the other one. Then decide which wheels you want, and we'll be able to help you with the width of the trucks. The hub of the wheels along with the width of the wheels will dictate what size trucks you need. Here's a thread that'll show you what I mean about the hubs: Center-Set, Off-Set, Whatever-Set
So, if you get sideset wheels you'll need narrower trucks, but for offset wheels you'll need a little wider, and for center-set you'll need even wider ones still. It looks to me, from the board pictured on the site that it has center-set wheels.

So I believe that if you buy some center-set wheels, like Grippins, you'd want to get some tracker sixtracks, or Independents 169's. That truck and wheel combination should be right around the stock width. Possibly a tad bit wider. Another possible combo would be Indy 149's (or Tracker or Orion 149's) and Abec-11 Flashbacks.

Another thing to consider when thinking about trucks such as Randals, is that the wheelwells may not quite line up right any more. That's why I recommend the Trackers and Indy's. Wedged risers will help them turn even better, since you'll be needing risers anyways.

Let us know the width from the outside of the wheels though, in case my estimates are wrong! Hope that helped

Moravec thank you so much for that detailed advice! I don't have any measuring tape right now but I'll see what I can do. I didn't know the wheels had the offsetting going on, I'll definitely need to keep it in mind. Thank you!!!

Oh one more question, what is it about the randals that will affect the wheelwells? Do they turn differently?

I got a sector 9 nose walker as my first deck it came with cr@ptastic half plastic gullwings and risers, I ditched the trucks and risers for some type 1 revenges and 75a grippens it rides a little high for me but able to pull out some crazzy clean carves with no wheel bite

I'm glad I could help! With the Randals, I've heard that they change the wheelbase a little bit and won't quite line up right with the wheelwells.

ayap, how is the flex for you on your board? I'm getting the same thing and I was wondering about it. All the descriptions say is "medium flex", but what is that in reality?

Just go for wheels, those missions should be fine...

I think I got gumballs before I went to randalls... With my old S9 board

jlmitch: This is my first board, so I'm not sure how to describe it since flex is all relative I'm about 200lbs, and it definitely flexes quite a bit under my weight. Two of my colleagues run trick boards, and those have zero flex, another colleague has an Arbor Fish, that too has zero flex. The Golden Lefts is like a piece of balsa compared to theirs

Jraice: Yes should be keeping the mission trucks for a bit. To be honest it's taking quite a bit of willpower not to buy some seismics, those look so darned cool. But I think I'll just learn as I go with these trucks first

    Thanks all!

Sweet! Just try out those wheels first, and figure out how well they work with the width of the trucks. Have fun man

    Hey everyone!
Just thought I'd like to update you guys on my Grippins! Being larger wheels they do raise the board a little bit, but I'm not experiencing any wheel bite. They do give a smoother ride, and perhaps it's just psychological, but I'm getting much more confidence going over rougher terrain.

It's definitely going faster once it's moving, and going upslope wasn't as difficult as I thought (or perhaps I'm getting used to going upslope Traction wise, I'm not really seeing any difference, but hey I'm a n00b

I've mentioned my setup further up the thread, and I whilst the grippins do extend out quite a fair bit compared to my old wheels (my old wheels are like half the width of the grippins!), they aren't really a problem. I am also quite certain I won't be changing my gullwing trucks anytime soon unless they break or something Loving my board the way as it is. Oh, I've swapped my stock bushings out for bones medium and hard (front and rear), if anyone cares.

Thank you all for your help and assistance! Back to lurking

    Regards,
    Alvin

Sounds awesome! Those bones bushings are sweet.... I have the same combo (medium/hard front/back) on my crail DH trucks on my demonseed speedboard... The back bushing is nice and solid for stability and that front one is reboundy but turns like a carvy truck almost... Have taken it to about 40mph, going to take it up a notch this thursday...

Stick with the gullwings, I think (especially with new bushings) they are an amazing truck for cruising, prefer them more then randalls for most boards (stock randalls that is) and my buddy even uses his M1's for DH... His board is just a cruiser but he rides pretty well and gets it up to 30-35mph with the M1's.

If you can't feel a traction difference between stock 61mm S9s and Grippins then you need to, as Homer Simpson would say, put more mustard on your carves.

The real test traction wise would be a nice high speed hairpin ...

Then again though, with the harder back bushing the tail of the board wont be wipping out as much while carving so this could keep the back from drifting out no-matter when wheel is being used...
