will bearings for an 8mm axle and bearings for a 10mm axle fit in the same wheel, and are the 10mm bearings rated on the same abec scale

That's not a stupid question. It's a pretty common one, actually. The "8mm" or "10mm" axle issues apply to the "bore" of the bearing, not the outside dimensions. The chinese bearing that most people run on 10mm axles (best marketed by SinSystems) is a little narrower than a standard 608 bearing, but the same diameter. Many people run them on regular axles, with some "tophat spacers" in there to shim the axle/bearing fit.

i'm starting to think this whole 10mm thing might be a tad bit excessive if it's that uncommon.

Unless you've actually bent an axle, then it's probably a bit pointless.

And what I said probably came out wrong, I didn't mean that it's like impossible to find 10mm bearings, it's just that bearings don't really make much of a difference.

They are easier to find then some bushings. If you've ever bent an axle, than you would know why there are lots of riders willing to endure that miniscule extra amount of work involved in obtaining 10mm bearings.
