I couldn't do good flat spins with my killed slide As. As soon as i got new ones I was tearing them out. My standers got much bigger as well. I stand by my opinion.
The earthwing wheels have a sliding sweetspot and its not when they are new, the small amount of contact patch gained is irrelevant, as you get closer to the core the thane is influenced more by the harder core, and this results in less grip. Ask any of the Earthwing riders, they will tell you the wheels have a sweet spot when the thane wears down close to the outer letters of the graphics. Or ride pats slide setup....or mine...and stop being such a wise ass
But you are right nick, I need to go skate more. I havent had a proper slide session in two months since my deck wasnt with me, failed a pendy and a layup last week, got a bleeding elbow lol.
Edit: I did some "scientific" research on this, frictional force is generally not dependent on surface area, and it would be really friggin hard/useless to figure out coulomb forces because the thane is adhered to a harder core which alters surface roughness and its general importance (usually not very but different in this case). On top of that, traction would be a big issue. The weight of the wheels would decrease but their footprint would increase, and friction would be a pita to figure out+ our definition of "broken in" varies....so yeah....lol.

i'd have to say just broken in slide a's slide more for sure.... but i like them better when they're down to 55ish mm so they have a wider contact patch but still slidy since they're closer to the core.
the wider contact patch rules for standers, i prefer a little push back so the deck doesnt just slide out from me.
Anyone want for bushings?
You can have it if you give me 2 =DD
They got run over buy a car and i ripped out the hub after it was like half sunk in it was kinda crazy.

I'm with Lb1 and Pat on this one +1. I like mine when they are a bit worn down as Pat said, that little bit of resistance that helps keep you up in long standers. Lb1 is right though they do slide longer I think when they're just a bit broken in.
The wider contact patch to me affect more of how the wheel hooks back up. On standup 360's and similar slides you're going to have the force to break out either wheel but the wider contact patch helps it hook up a bit more predictibly IMO.

Stevie, could you mesure the diameter of the white core, please.
Interesting to hear different people's opinions on new vs. broken-in slide wheels.
In my experience, brand spankin new Slide A's are very slick. I like them best when the surface is just slightly roughed up. They seem to have a nice, fast roll (esp. since they are closest to round at this point) and the slide still breaks free really easily.
As the wheel gets worn down, the contact patch really does get pretty big. I'm just speculating, but the overall feel might have more to do with the ratio of contact patch to diameter, rather than contact patch alone. For example, brand new Slide As are around 25:62, whereas some of my worn out wheels are more like 38:49. The latter felt ridiculously more grippy than newer wheels (hell, they look like itty bitty slalom wheels!).
My slides have always felt much more controllable when using worn in wheels, since they grip more and are easier to hook up right when I want them to. But I definitely like them best when they're pretty close to new. Standing 3s flow more seamlessly and I can hold powerslides a whole lot longer.
