Not sure if you can take them apart but you can clean therm.

Mine were off a second hand board and they were pretty gunked up. The shields didnt seem to come off so I just soaked them in a jar of petrol and made sure I shook them up as often as I could to shake the crap out. Everytime the petrol got dirty i changed it. Once it stayed clean I soaked it for an hour or something longer then left them to dry for half a day then blew them through with compressed air just to be sure. After that I soaked them the same way for about a day in sewing machine oil (really cheap stuff...like $1.00 for a 20mL) same as I did with the petrol. After that I just dried off and put them into wheels.

One thing you need to be careful of is that excess oil will seep out once you ride them because you cant control how much has gone in (this isnt really a big deal though). I'm not sure if this is the right way but it worked fine for me (if anything they felt faster afterwards) and I have a good set of extra bearings.

Yeah, I dunno but I doubt mine would be unique. I had the same drama concreteaddict is having and tried this because I'd just bought a set of Modus and didnt really care what happened to these ones. That was about a year ago and the bearings are still going strong with that kind of cleaning.

thanks for the speedy replies guys. I've chosen to buy some cheap bone reds to replace my old balls, but i've come across another problem now. Are bone reds (and any other bearing for that matter) made to fit any brand wheel? Or are there differen't sizes? since i can't find any sizing info for the reds i'm think its all the same. i have 10'' gullwing trucks on my old set up that i would like to put these reds on.. you reckon they'd fit?

    thanks again

yes, they are all the same size, 8mm. they do make 10mm bearings, but they are harder to find and would be clearly marked as 10mm.

to hell with greaseballs, i don't understand why some one would make a disposable bearing such as this. I would soak them in a cleaning solution, but there is so much crap in mine that liquids along can't take out.

I just replaced mine with some reds. The greaseballs got really dented up for some reason.

The usual reasons are that the skater isn't using speedrings so the truck hanger and axle nut contact the bearing shield, or the skater dents the shields with his skate tool when putting the wheels on by pushing down on the wrench.

Many double shielded bearings have little clips that hold the shields on. If the greasballs don't have those and the shields truely are "permanent", you can always just pry them off completely and leave them off. Then just put the side with no shield on it facing towards the inside of your wheel.

Thats Exactly what I did i took off one shield and left the other. Then i cleaned em and re lubed em and the shield less part is on the inside of my wheel. in order to get the one side off your going to have to use an exacto knife or something similar to slide in the side of the bearing and bend it up enough so you can get needle nosed pliers on em and pull it off. look here for some more information I had the same question http://www.silverfishlongboarding.co...+Sector+Nine+9

you might as well keep the bearings its always nice to have an extra set on hand even if you did buy a new set they can make for a good back up, and an even better backup if clean.

Wish I'd known this, after 6 month of riding my 1st longboard(Sector 9 Roundhouse, discontinued ) one of my greaseballs seiezed on me. I replaced them with reds and I'm happy. But I did save the working bearings, just in case I feel the need to go rain sliding someday.

here's what i've done myself two:
cuting open the metal-shield and cleaning them this way.. (they're about one year old)
wasn't easy: with the cutter/exacto knife you get to deform the shield wide enough so that you can get a stronger knife under it and tear it up open. but succeeded at last
now, i'll be rolling it with the open-side turned inside my wheels.
at least they feel like new now ! i should have done this even earlier.
might get faster dirty, but will now be easy to clean again.
but yes, i won't buy them again.. not a great idea that "unremovable" shield..

i have the same problem as Concreteaddict. It looks like the shield is somehow crimped on to the bearing.

So, that's how i did it: i cracked open one side of the bearing and leave it that way. i'm using them open-side in and clean them every few months and they work fine..
here are some pictures of the process..

just did this mod myself, and going around my street a few times not a huge difference. used some 10w40 motor oil and an oil stabilizer mix to lube them so that could be part of it, but thats just a little test, gonna go out and cruise around later and see if its a big difference.

my dad had a special tool which made the mod a ton easier. its some little scraper type thing which slipped right under the cover and popped it off, most of the covers could have been reused but i didnt bother.

You just have to pop off the shield. It's a little difficult at first but once you do that, you're home free.
