97mm Flys for speedboarding?
Ok guys I have a 46' Subsonic reflex with Radikal trucks, 97mm flys and bones swiss 6
I was wondering if anybody here in the fish has tried the 97flys at higher speeds.
Prior to the flys I was running 75a BigVents all around, I bought the flys here in the fish there pretty new but I'n not to familiar with flys,I just wanted to try them out. Anyways I went to one of my local hills to try them out and they felt really weird it's hard to explain but I'll try.
I was doing 46.8 mph (GPS) the wheels felt like they were hovering like there is no positive connection with the road, in one instance they drifted to the other lane with out me even moving they just went it's like they have a mind of there own is it because there are not fully broken in? or something else is going on? any body has any ideas?
I also have a set of 90mm flys that I got as a combo when I bought the trucks, I used them on my 46' Subsonic Highland with bear trucks and they ride really good the 90 flys don't behave the same as the 97 why? by the way the 97 are 78a, the 90 are 80 and 78 I think.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, cold beer in one hand - longboard in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming, Yeaa Haaa What A Ride!!!

Flys are built for speed. Ride them bitches down a big hill and try not to wet yourself with joy.

I do not feel any joy wen I'm just there for the ride, I like to be in control specially at higher speeds. I don't wanna go any faster till I figure then out or exchange them for something else.

97mm wheels can bend your truck axles, make sure you arent sliding and what not, or get 10mm axles.
just a warning
but you probably already know that,
the wheels shouldnt be hovering, 48mph, were you in a tuck? your weight should keep them down, if they are new they might not be broken in yet. hmm

WOW - I've gone just under 42 with 97's like a year or so ago - and I could NEVER find a way to describe what they felt like, but your description above regarding "hovering like there is no positive connection" was not only ON THE HEAD but also brought about a bit of nostalgia....that was weird......I gave 'em up after 2 runs with 'em....
And keep in mind - I tried the 97's on an Evo with R.DH, AND a lowered Demonseed with R.DH wedged/dewedged to my preference which feels bombproof with Avila's or even Sec' 9 70mm Nineballs...
The 97's felt like there was very little contact...Thanks for that trip down memory lane ! ! !

My Radikals have Ti axels so bending them is out of the ?, I'm 6"3' 215lbs and in full tuck
The flys look pretty new tho, but so do the 90flys and they never felt the same as the 97.

It's lighter than steel but the tensil strenght of Ti is much greater.

Depends on the grade and/or alloy.
Your common commercial Ti has a lower tensile strength than some carbon steels.
But, I would assume Rad's used some higher grade Ti alloys in their axles.

Re: 97mm Flys for speedboarding?
'tis what I use on the same deck, but with Randal DHs (hopefully soon to be Randal Frankentrucks), and havn't had any problems with them. However, I havn't given it nearly enough love since i expanded my quiver, and would be skeptical if someone told me that i had gone much past 30 on it. Hopefully that'll change sunday...

It depends on the quality of the Ti according to radikal they had the highest quality Ti available. Some other manufactures used a Ti alloy and still call it Ti. I'm not a metallurgist by no means tho, if somebody here is, please educate us.
But please remember the main issues here is the 97 flys not the ti axels.

Re: 97mm Flys for speedboarding?
Pure grade Ti has the same tensil strength as steel. There are 2 common metal mixtures of Titanium 6AL-4V, stiff used in aircraft and marine applications (and for axles on race bicycles and Titanium 3AL/2V a bit flexible commonly used in bicycle frames and various other tubing uses. Now 25 years ago I used to race bikes and you just weren't cool unless you had Ti axles and Crank Bottom Brackets. I had to be cool and went through 3 BB axles and destroyed at least 2 sets of wheels before I decided to switch back to steel....Ti is f****** expensive

Re: 97mm Flys for speedboarding?
THX for all the Ti replys, no more please. This thread was started because the issues I have with 97mm flys not Ti axels. I want to find out why they are behaving the way they are.
Any coments on that will be greattly appreciated. any one?

Re: 97mm Flys for speedboarding?
Well I gotta ask what duro you where using. That might account for the "floaty" feel. I know some folks who ride 97mm flys and are quite happy with em.

I wrote in my post 78a I will check hold on, yeah I was right 78a all around. I'm going tomorrow morning to do some runs, I'm taking the 97flys, 90flys and my Favorite 85 bigvents. See if I can figure this out. Any other coments are welcome.
