The wheels on my Dervish are tightened up so that there is just a tiny amount of side to side play. I know this is correct and it makes for better slides, or so I'm told.
However, when my Demonseed arrived a couple of weeks ago, the wheels were nipped up tight so that there is no play, but not too tight that the bearings bind. I scrubbed in the wheels which are flywheels 76mm 78a, and was amazed when I did my first coleman on that board as it slid so smoothly and quietly with no chatter or bite from the wheels at all.
I am new to longboarding having only started seriously in April this year, but am now confused as to how tight the wheels should be. Play or no play?
okay I get all that.
Now I have just got some In Heat Tangs, and if I use two speed rings per wheel, I can't get the nylock portion of the thread on the wheel nut to engage. I know I'm not the only one to find this.
I've set it up with one speed ring next to the hanger, a spacer in the wheel and the wheel nut tightened down directly onto the inner bearing race.
The surface area of the nut is no geater than the speed ring, and it's shaped so as not to come into contact with the bearing shield, so I can't see any benefit having a speed ring that side of the wheel???
Is this setup okay??
I see from elsewhere on the forum that there is a great deal of debate about speed rings
Biltins look good, but some of my boards have trucks that have 10mm axels, and biltins only do 8mm I think.
Biltins are a brand of bearings. They have spacers and speed rings built in to the bearing. With my Biltins, I tighten down the nut with no play, and they spin freely.

but they're still only 8mm

yeah, he had edited his post asking what Biltins were. I know they are only 8mm
yes I did ask what they were, then I thought I'd better find out so at looked at daddies and saw, and they do look really good. I checked and no one had replied, so I edited it, but as I was editing, you must have been replying. SORRY, I didn't mean to offend.
I still don't know why I need a speed ring on the outside of the wheel. I've just been skating for 2 hours trying to get these Tangs worn in, and it's been fine with no speed ring between the nut and the outer bearing.
Can't anyone quantify why you need two per wheel?????
