Default Wheels & Bearings for the Rain?

Was looking through an old forum and saw someone mention rain-grooved wheels and water proof bearings? That true or is a pipe-dream?

    Rain Wheels:
    Eastside Rain Wheels
    Landyachtz Aqua Hawgs
You can also take any set of wheels you own and cut grooves into them yourself. 2-3 grooves seems to work best as far as rain riding goes here in the Pacific NW.

As far as bearings go, just use a grease based lubricant instead of an oil based lubricant and you'll be good. Cleaning them after every rain sesh is still a wise decision if you want them to last.

    what? thats not true...

use something with a smaller contact patch and jsut be sure to clean your bearings afterward. if you cut grooves, they say it will be better, but do you really want to cut grooves?

Sweet! Thanks guys....I think I'm going to buy some of those Landyachtz Hawgs for the rain.....what kind of "grease" or lube would be ideal for using in the bearings? Brand specific if possible? What does it mean to "tape up" bearings for bad weather? Like scotch tape on the bearing itself that faces towards the nut / axle?

Okay and does anyone have any instructions on how to waterproof your board? I heard that soaking it in acetone is good but what do you do after??

    Taping:
    Gorilla Tape + Rain Wheels

As far as grease goes, you can use Tri-Flow bike grease (REI, Joes, or any bike shop probably sells it). I typically just use normal lube and clean them after a rain sesh.

Haha please don't soak your board in acetone, it'll break down the glues and your board will fall right apart. Coat your whole board in a layer or two of lacquer or some polyacrylic and you should be good to go. You can buy polyacrylic (or just acrylic) at any hardware store or any place that sells spray paint (I have a can of clear acrylic spray right here waiting to be used on my Comet Voodoo as soon as the artwork is done on it).

Take off the grip tape, do a couple layers of acrylic or lacquer, and then regrip it and you'll be good to go. If you scratch it off at any point, you'll need to redo it in that place, but it's not a big deal. One small scratch where water can enter won't cause your board to become waterlogged.
