3dm Avila's? (please read if you know about them)
alright, so im looking for a grippy wheel, its still gotta be fast. and i would prefer if it were a bit wider than most wheels. people have been saying get the avila's, how do they hold up/perform? tell me your knowledge haha. thanks
and my set up is either ian comishin with randal DH's or rayne nemisis with kaha's. im looking for a wheel that will grip turns at around 50+

Re: 3dm Avila's? (please read if you know about them)
i hope you mean 50 KPH and not MPH...no wheel is going to give you grip through turns at 50 mph.
that aside, avilas are great wheels. they grip great and from what you've said, they'd probably be your best bet since you're looking for a wider wheel. however, the only way you'll find out whether or not they're for you is by taking a chance and trying them out. every wheel has different grip/slide characteristics, and the best way to figure out which suits you best is by trying different wheels out and seeing what you like most.
btw, i've got a set of blue avilas for sale if you end up deciding you want to try some out..pm me

I have the purple skunk 72a purple avilas. I like them. they take a little bit longer to get going, but they hold speed for a long time. you might want a higher duro like 77a or 81a. the higher duro will be faster. these are also one of the widest wheels available. if you intend to slide them at all, you should trim the lips. they will chunk if you do not trim them. they are supposed to be super awesome once trimmed. I have yet to trim mine. i am considering it because I dont want to chunk them, but i don't slide with these wheels.

I've had the solid blue 81a Avila's for 2 years, if you get them trim the lips it will improve the life and prevent chunking. They don't stick quite as well as BigZigs nor are they particularly good for drifting (no wheel that weighs a half pound does), though to me they hook up smoother than BZ.

very much so, a friend of mine has the 73a's and they grip like nuts until they let go and its rough when they hook back up with the road. if you want a super grippy wheel that doesnt slide/drift half too bad then go for speedvents. they weight less and arent as wide but grip like helll

I've always skated faster on Zigs but I hate the way they feel. I would say limes are slightly grippier than the 81a Avila's. I trimmed my Avila's with a belt sander...there is a how to in the sticky thread of this very forum....don't use a router unless you are really talented with power tools

alright, so ill most likely go with the 77's.
and thanks. so you just sand the whole lip off? like 5-8mm?

Re: 3dm Avila's? (please read if you know about them)
THe cheapest way to go about this is to just get some 78a 69mm or 74mm s9rf. Grip like bigzigs and drift like buttaaaaah
Can't beat them at $40 bucks either

yuck....I so didn't like the 77's I tried which is why I ended up on Avilas....no need to take off more than 2-3mm square it, wedge it or roll it depending on what you want.

Yeh I've been dreaming about a dropdeck since I stood on my friends chinook. It's just so hard to find work. I should have enough money by this summer though which is perfect timing.
Kennesaw mt. FTW
And btw s9rf are my go to wheel for all occasions, but I'm really enjoying my 86a freerides

Re: 3dm Avila's? (please read if you know about them)
They grip so hard. I've gone from freaking out about heelside turns to getting all patrick rizzo on them. They're an awesome wheel. Both the round lipped and square lipped wheelsare great for dh. I tend to use the round lipped wheels on hills where I'll be doing alot of speedchecks and the square lipped wheels for everything else.
Yeh the freerides are fun but I use them as a slide specific wheel so it's all about getting slippery

Re: 3dm Avila's? (please read if you know about them)
currently I have two sets. 74mm and some hekka worn 81mm. I think they're actually down to around 74 mm haha.
I usually roll in sets of two. One square lipped and one round lipped.
I was actually able to kill a 70mm set in one week after me and a friend found a super gnar neighborhood where every hill required at least one speed check. They may grip really hard but they won't grip 90* turns at 40mph haha
