When I was in the Philippines I had balut and durian on the same night. The balut was unpleasant but palatable. The durian made me gag and I couldn't finish it.

That is absolutely disgusting. It reminds me of when I was in a run-down supermarket and I picked up an egg and shook it, and could hear the body of a dead chick shaking around.

Meanwhile, when I was in Tokyo a zillion years ago some locals wanted to shock us so they fed us something they described as "squid cooked in the contents of its own stomach." It was totally fine. Nato, too. In Singapore, I couldn't even get near the durian.

belut is a fertilized egg that is cooked before it has the chance to hatch. So you are eating a furry and crunchy bird with nappy goop in it.
