Ive found that when you DONT grab rail? That you can use your back foot to really kick out the back and bring it back in in a faster, more controlled manner. When you grab rail, you have to rotate your body with the board, and when you dont, you can keep your shoulders square and really whip the wheels out and back

so if i just try and keep my hand closer in it should be just as smooth?
Yeah! Don't grab rail if you don't have to. Yeah just play around with hand positions
when im going more than 35mph i feel like the board is gonna slip out from under me so i grab rail.
i tried practicing without grabbing but it generally ends in the board snapping out from under me. tips?

I find grabbing the board during a high speed slide, or check gives more control because your body is more attached to the board. The trick is to be aware of where your shoulders are pointing, and to keep your movements small.

Hooray! Thanks Blix! I just sent this info over a PM, but felt like it needed to be read by the general populous of this thread.
Bushings - explained.
Bushings, once you understand the shape of them and how they relate to your bushing seat on the hangar of your truck, are simple. take a randal. the bushing seat is shallow, with little support. barrels are easily compressed without much restriction. a stepped bushing, such as a jimz or an eliminator, has more urethane in the middle that fits nicley on a randal, and the portion of bushing that steps out really resists the lean of the hangar and creates a different feel. a cone has the least urethane. it holds little rebound on one end and a fair amount on the other. this gives it a characteristic that seems like it "dives" and has a progressive feel. barrels feel neutral. lots of rebound on both ends. does not resist lean like an eliminator. an eliminator on the bottom of a truck unlocks huge potential in rebound. also, because there is so much urethane, a lower duro can be used to give the truck a more intimate feel.
The bushing seat in a truck played a huge role in how the bushings behave. a paris hangar bushing seat for example is deep. it resists the compression of the bushing for a more progressive, familiar feel. it is a better truck to use barrels and cones in, thought i believe that double barrels feel the best. the bushing seat snaps the bushings back when your weight is neutral, unlocking the rebound in the urethane. it feels good. really good.

You are probably the 2nd most helpful 'Fish member that I've ever come across. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
<3
Edit: Carl, do you think you could explain how the shape of a bushing and the hardness correlates to the position (top or bottom)???
Someone on FC explained it to me, but I'm still having a little trouble actually grasping the concept...
For example, how would a soft bottom and hard top compare to a hard bottom and soft top?
Elim bottom to Barrel top, barrel bottom to elim top. basically the possibilities are endless, but is there a trend?

[mehbear!] 10:31 pm: ahh 12 year old boys. the ripe age where they haven't got any
fluff. all more pleasureable for the touching
So ive been working on my cornering and i seem to drift on some 90* turns on a topmount when my buds can take it on drop throughs and not drift out.
technique tips for me? (heelside btw)
do i want to be up in my tuck, or kinda drop into a drop knee stance? where should i center my weight at? all on the front foot, about 70/30 front/back, even, 30/70 front/back, or all on the back?
I'm trying to take the corners at top speed and not drift at the same time, so i'd prefer to keep it in my tuck.
-thanks!

i just try to keep as much weight over my wheels as possible..evenly too
Stay over your board, don't lean off the side too much. staying farther away from the ground helps too. weight should be even. (the less weight on a wheel, the more it will drift)
bushing explanation soon. im still swimming in a pile of tasks
edit: LOL rodrod stepping up to the plate

hey! i just got hooked to dwnhill.
the problem i have with colman slides is that when i get to about 90* my wheels gain grip even if im hanging off the board holding the front side rail. which puts me flying forwards down the hill. (not fun) is it because my 78a whees are too soft?

try putting abit more weight on your hand that would probably stop you from high-siding. it helps to have harder wheels and looser trucks when you just start out learning colemans but once you got the technique down i believe its pretty possible to do it on soft wheels.
im super sketchy with toesides right now. drifts are just uncontrollable and sketchy! but im working on it. i recall reading somewhere that when you're taking turns you gotta distribute some weight to your back?
