IMO trimming the lips of the Avilas below 60mm defeats the purpose of spending the extra money on them. Trimming them a bit would be ideal just so the lips hold up. If you make them any less than 60mm just get bigzigs.
DO NOT GET OTANGS
yes they are pretty much the best wheel for dh
but you wont have them for long, i have seen people go through a set of otangs in one day of hard riding
hears another example
this is what jacko shapeira (orangatang team rider) goes through in just 6 months
avilas are pretty much the opposite to this, it will be another year before you even need to think about replacing them, they wear so well, and take so much abuse,
zigs can be called the middle ground between these two

people say the avilas don't slide well. Im looking to do some pretty technical dh (90 degree turns) where it will be integral that I can pre drift. Will avilas work for this???
Don't get a wider wheel if you want to drift then. Avilas would be for sticking corners. Zigs will be better for you then if you need to throw some drifts.
You can find MANY threads on the characteristics of zigs and otangs. Otangs slide more than zigs. Zigs grip better but have a choppier slide. Otangs wear out much faster than Zigs do.

But really, you can't go wrong with either wheel. You're going to have to try them before you know which one you like more. You won't learn which wheels are better from the fish.

to answer your question, no not well, that's not what Avila's are designed for, for that you would be better off using a Speedvent or Blastwave wheels (if you want to use 3dm/seismic wheels, both have a better profile for drifting and yet retain the grip and stability for straight line speed
