we were skating on a local hill the other day. an older guy wanted to know about the physics of sliding, and then a mom brought us water and told us that her son had wanted to give us water, and thanked us for not being loud vulgar and obnoxious.

Today some dude who was stopped at the top of the hill said "you must have some big cojones" (or however you spell spanish for balls) then before I made my run he said "you ain't got no brakes on them things?!" To which I showed him the palms of my gloves and said "nope, we just slide to control speed" as my buddy pulled a stalefish speed check. Haha

One of the most common reactions that I get here in Baltimore is usually a variation of racist slurs, commonly from middle school or elementary school aged kids. Every once and awhile a highschool kid will yell at me to, "do a kickflip" or try to chase me like he's gunna fight me or some crap.

One time a dude yelled at me from his house, "Yo homie, you gatta be skiddin dem wheels with my windows open?". I did not quite understand who he was talking to. I'm white.

The most current thing that has happened you can not call a comment, but you would know that she wanted to make one. I was riding down a hill headed toward one of my classes, college campus, and a lady was driving down below the hill where it flattens out. I end up rolling by her a little faster than she is driving, along the driver side and she looks at me with a look of wonder and terror at the same time, watching me as I get past the front of her car, then I guess she noticed my board and was then either worried or angry that I was on the street I am not sure, it ended up my turn was sooner than when I could get a better look.

"...and then he just blew by us!"

(Overheard after a 6-mile push race in which I "blew by" some young guys who were spaghetti-leggin' it in the last mile.)

    -------------------------

"Man, I didn't train for this!"

    (A 22 y.o. guy as I passed in mile 4.)

    ---------------------------

Then later while I'm exhibition skating:

"Really dude you were sandbagging, huh!"

(When they realized that I displayed a 35" balsa racing board, a drop deck, a drop-thru, and a light bamboo deck, but I rode a 45" maple dancer with very heavy, soft wheels in the race.)

Get the eff out!!! Yelled by some ahole hanging half out the window of a speeding SUV while I was riding down a large hill (first run so I was just carving it out). On the flip side a woman in another SUV said what I was doing looked very cool!! And I was fully padded up lol!

A couple months back a few friends and I were skating a flowy local hill in one of the wealthy neighborhoods around here. A man in a yellow SUV pulled up and asked "Do you kids want some hay bales on these corners? I own a farm just at the end of the road!" We turned him down as we were just getting our final runs in and he continued "I'm financing the development just up the road" (They are building a third small town on our island) "I'm a big fan of what you kids are doing, if you ever want to throw an event or need some hay bales you know where to find me." He pointed toward his property. "I want this to be a young persons town."

Wow! I hope you can appreciate that at your tender age. What I see so often from the "near-senior" adults around me is this casual, self righteous, off-hand disregard for the young. Rarely is it worse than that, but talk about bias! You rarely see anyone forthcoming to the kids when you're out there on the road.

I appreciate it more than you can imagine! The locals around here are pretty tame and dont exactly enjoy having us in their neighborhoods. As a matter of fact, I think that was the only forwardly positive comment I've gotten.

Story number two, this was yesterday. I stood atop of a short and sweet techy run when a smart car (the same smart car that had almost rear ended a friend of mine going way over the speed limit not even an hour prior mind you) stopped to have a word with me. He told me that he is a resident on this road, that his neighborhood is not a skate park, that there have been too many close calls for us to be doing this and that all of our perants should be ashamed of us. He warned me he was going to call the police and drove off. Being the short, quiet, shy 19 year old that I am... I smiled, gave alot of thumbs up and nodded acknowledgingly, awkward grin on my face. After my run I told the group that it was time to call it quits on the hill, what had happened and how it went down. We waited around for the police to show so we could explain ourselfs (The police in our town know us and like us. Have even given us time to shuttle our final heats up and cheered as we finished our outlaws) However, no police ever came.

Moral of this story: The best way to battle sheer ignorance, aggressiveness and a false sense of authority... is with a smile and a good attitude.

Alright so a few months ago i took my younger bros to pick put some new boards, everything was great and they were pumped up to give them a try. before we hit the parking lot a man stops us and proceeds to tell my bros how those things are death traps that one of his friends are brain dead because of skating and that we should go return them because they just paid for a "death ticket" they're 12 and 15. We've always woren helmets but my youngest bro won't even ride much anymore becausse he is terrified of hospitals and doesnt wanna end up there. Some people need to stop scaring kids into living life in a bubble. Freak accidents happen but theyre no reason kids shouldnt have fun

I see in your location you're in BC. I only really started to appreciate BC a couple months back. There's so much going on around just in this province, it's amazing. We have the best of everything just a drive away. I LOVE IT!

"You're getting really good! Are you the kid from down the block?" (The kid from down the block is African-American, 15 at the oldest and rides a shortboard; I am white, 44 and ride a longboard). This is the second time I've been mistaken for him. We both wear white helmets, so maybe that's the mixup.

I did have some guy about two days ago complain about all the thane lines on the road. He was pretty rude about it. I was trying to be cool with him but he continued to get angry. It went something like this...
    Guy: hey!! come over here!
    Me: umm yes?
Guy: What are these?(points to thane lines)
Me: thane lines from my wheels sir, its what happens when I slide
Guy: I dont care! this is vandalism! you need to leave right now!
Me: sir im gonna have to ask you too calm down, I will leave as soon as you coroperate with me
Guy: You need to ******* calm down! dont tell me to calm down! I am an adult! I can do what I want!
Me...you know what ill just leave you be and go to another hill. Obviously your angry about it(I then get on my board and leave)
    Guy: GOOD! SCRAM! CRIMINAL!

I tried to rep you, but apparently I have rep-d you at some point in time, no rep for you. But, you need to know that your story is a good one! Yes, I have had the same issue at times too, I just chalked it up to the fact that all Longboarders look the same.
