Endurance
Ok, so 6 months ago I posted about toeside predrift help and stuff and that solved that problem so I thought I"d try this one out on silverfish too.... ohh and I did a search and there's nothing really good on this so yeah
what are some things to do while tucking to save your legs otehr than the obvious workout and long runs......
because usually when I'm with people on the west coast I feel like I'm going to die whilst keeping up with them while they still seem surfy and californian.
On bumpy roads: Soft wheels?
More weight or pressure over a certain position?
Shoulder postions?
I have a west coast tuck (close legs/high/aero/ rarely grap rail/ knees locked into each other)
Feet and ankle excercises and stuff?
anyhthing would help out

Re: Endurance
Make an indo board. Tuck on it.
Once you can last 5 minutes in tuck on the indo board you'll be set.

Re: Endurance
East coast legs vs. West coast legs
When all you skate are east coast runs that are like, 0.25-0.5 miles long... you're not going to build much muscle.
The best thing I did for my legs was skate Cypress in Vancouver a bunch - 6 miles of nothing but sitting in your tuck. Other than finding long ass roads where you can work your tuck... I don't know. Get comfortable locking your back knee into your front calf and resting your upper body on the support they form. Hold your tuck for a few minutes in front of a mirror and make sure you're nice and solid/lined up well.

actually this is pretty good... I do it a lot. Helps balance and strengthens your legs.
Just holding a tuck for a longer than you actually ride in it will help. A backpack full of books or something would probably help strengthen legs too.
I remember my first 3+ mile run... It was brutal on my legs. now I tuck the the same run 5 or 6 times a day.

Best advice. I hang out on my indo board all the time and it damn sure helps. I can now manual for blocks if I get it locked with enough speed, and tucking on a balance board is awesome because you can visually analyze where your weight is distributed between the front and back based on the location of the roller.

Re: Endurance
if you dont have long runs, i would suggest finding exercises for your thighs, glutes and calves. squats, the calf exercise where you put your feet on a ledge and lift yourself up without moving the ball of your foot (forget the name), leg presses. running up and down stairs in a stadium seem like thatd be pretty awesome too. I'd actually harbor a guess that running lots in general would prolly be good. indo board sounds kickass too.
soft wheels i've generally found to be better on bumpy roads, harder wheels seem to chatter more. flatspotted wheels are horrible to tuck on...found this out recently
most weight on front, usual deal. depends if you're going for a straight up tuck the #### out of everything cuz i wanna win a race tuck, or chilling down a long run tuck. racing - stay the #### locked in, most weight on front and fly until your legs cramp up and you fall off the board. chill riding - shift the weight around to keep the blood flowing? change tucks...varies a lot, havent found a good shitty tuck to rock.
shoulders down nice and low as always
frankly tho, i think if you dont have long roads, you're just #### out of luck. i believe (no real hard facts backing this, just my opinion), exercises will help, but in the end, shitloads of gnar skating is what's gonna get ur legs up to speed.

Thanks Bpiz, and yeah I do that all the time with the mirror, helps a lot
and for reference

usually I keep my head a lot lower and I sorta look down but this was my first run down calremont and there was no one there to tell me about holes and #### so I had to keep my head up

Re: Endurance
and yeah thanks people for the indo board idea
definitely going to do that, and yeah I can rock a shitty tuck if I have to as long is its not sittin sidewayz.......... and kick push (anyone get it)

Re: Endurance
One of the main reasons tucking for long distances builds leg stamina is because you are actively pushing against the wind. When standing in front of your mirror you'll build up some amount of leg strength but not nearly the same as actually skating. The main thing that will help is letting your body "rest" atop solid parts (legs and feet).
Beyond that, and if you truly have no long hills, do wall sits.

Re: Endurance
Come ride my roads! I got some nice long runs! I bet you have some in new england too you just gotta go out to them. Google earth is your friend! Theres just a lot of little subtleties you need to learn from riding a long turny road a lot. There are little tricks that can't really be explained. I learned real quick at maryhill last year about that even though I did a lot of training before hand I was no where near ready for that amount of riding. The indo board thing is for real too.

But it just looks really stupid.

Re: Endurance
Tucking for a long period of time is an isometric excersise, and requires isometric training.
Excersises that build muscular strength, (like Squats), will help some, and excersizes that increase muscular endurance, (like running), will help some. But what you really need to improve is your balance, and stabilizing muscles, (particularly the hip stabilizers).
Isometric lunges should help for developing the right type of stabilizing muscles, and one legged squats should help for improving balance.
