Cited and Boards Impounded

Yesterday a group of us headed out to (a road) to get a few runs in. Low and behold after the first time down we pass a sheriff and his partner coming around the last right turn. He immediately turned around and rolled us. He got all five of our boards, helmets, slide gloves and pads and said we can't get them back until january 1st when we get to ASK(!!!!) the judge if we can have our gear back. He wouldnt even give us back our safety gear...

so basically you cant ride a longboard, which is considered a toy, more than 10mph or down more than 3% grade in the state of California.

Worst part about it was that he made it seem like he was going to give us back our stuff the whole time. He made us load and unload the boards from his back seat a few times to take pictures as evidence. But at the last minute he made us put it all back in, sign our tickets, and then he left. We were non confrontational the whole time and polite since we thought it would give us better chances of getting our stuff back.

Lost two evos (1 had my new prandalls and purp inheats i got for my birthday last week), RB dh40, comet crystal chalice, and a legendary smooth drop(i think) plus 5 helmets and gloves.

Just a reminder for all of you guys, the Police apparently can take your stuff!

wow that totally blows. im so lucky cops near me have never been dicks when longboarding. the one time a cop even said anything was when a reckless driver almost ran me and my friend over. then he just told us to find a different spot because many people have gotten hit by cars their and skateboarding just increased that risk. hope you get your stuff back.

What is the actual charge on the citation? Is Jan when your Court Date is? Is it a mandatory appearance or is it a fine that you can take to court? I am willing to wager you can get your stuff back sooner.

thats really rough. i was longboarding in provience RI and i got stopped by a cop who was going to take my board and issue me a $150 fine until i told him it was my only way to get to work and school. cops need to be more accepting its not like its a popsicle stick tearing up city handrails.

Yea this is some bullshit right here! We pay cops wages! **** them pigs! honestly!

I'm all about being polite to police when they ask you not to skate somewhere... at least at that moment. But taking away your boards AND giving you a ticket?!? **** them! I woulda flipped out and got arrested I'm sure.

what gives them the right? It's a power trip and they need to get off their high hoarse and do something about all the other crimes going on in their cities... not a couple people skateing down a hill.

I would write a letter to your governer. You know arnold is cooler then that! Hell I think to help you out we should all write a letter to arnold.

and while were at it, maybe we should all write letters to respective heads of state where other people are having problems.

so much for FREEDOM!

I'm pretty sure they can't do that. I know in Michigan they can only take it to use as evidence or if you're using it as a weapon.

i know at the time it seems like being non-confrontational is going to make the cops be more lenient because you're cooperative. sometimes it just makes you look like you're remorseful because you feel guilty about doing something you presumably knew was wrong.

you really do need to ask what statutes you're violating. i would never hand my stuff over to a police officer because i know they have no idea what the specific laws pertaining to skateboards on the street are.

i'm not saying you need to run around his police cruiser screaming "rodney king!" at the top of your lungs (could help anyways?) just speak with confidence and ask a lot of questions.

were you in LA by chance? i looked up the statute and it appears to be specific to that city.
