Least air resistance. People do it on motorcycles and bikes too.

why do you tuck when you are bombing a hill? I know it's to get more speed but is it also the best way to stand when you are going that fast?
Nope, once you are going fast, you should stand up out of your tuck, spread your arms as wide as you can (like Kate & Leo in Titanic), and if you can throw down a brick attached to a rope attached to your board, even better! That is the best way to stand once you are going fast.

It's amazing to me how harsh and derogatory Silverfishers can be, especially as of late...
I imagine the OP is wondering whether a tuck is actually the most stable way to stand, or if we just practice it to get speed.
Well Mr. OP, a good speed tuck is in fact a good way to stand on a skateboard at speed. When done properly, one should feel fairly relaxed in their speed tuck, and have most of their weight over their front truck, which are the best things to be while moving at speed.
So yes, while the primary reason to tuck is to get more speed, you'll notice that most freeriders ride in a similar foot stance when they are just hitting hills for fun, even if they aren't tucking. The concepts of keeping weight over the front truck, and keeping your body relaxed are probably the most important elements of stance at speed.
Man, I can't stop putting my front foot completely perpendicular to the board... Every other way feels awkward. Is this bad? (Y/N)
Dunno. Mine are crooked. I hate em perpendicular.

Hope that helps

We tuck because at a certain speed its more stable, let alone faster.
Our head and chest rests passed the front truck because the center of pressure rests behind the center of gravity.
Its like loading a trailer before hitting the highway or resting on your gastank on your motorcycle.
Test it out on hill, but if you want to learn more, watch "The fastest Indian", you wont get much help on silverfish.
Hang you arm out the window next time you ride in a vehicle.
Stick you arm out the window at a 90* angle. Hold your hand out flat and vertically and then turn it flat and horizontally.
Which one pulls your hand backwards more?
This is called drag, aka wind resistance.

I asked the same thing when I was starting out; tucks feel unstable as hell at first, and I couldn't understand how or why "people use them to avoid the wobbles".
