So you think you`re fast?
Well you are not. I don`t care who you are.
Now that`s fast... I have to tip my hat to these guys. If we`re talking about pure speed I don`t know any downhill sport that`s faster. And that`s like ten years ago.
I have to say though... if some longboarders had access to a perfectly paved straight patch of asphalt on an incline like that I don`t think it would be long before they would be breaking 200. It would probably push gear through a new revolution too.

Re: So you think you`re fast?
Is this the apples to oranges thread? Why try to devalue the ability of people who can go sixty to seventy miles per hour on a skateboard?
If you can't hit bottom, wear the sides out.

yeah...might as well start racing airplanes and go 270+ ??

Nope not devaluing anyone. Just saying speed skiing is ridiculously fast and that these guys deserve a tip of the hat from us. Being speedboarders we can truly appreciate these guy's accomplishments. What they do is amazing. From one speed sport to another we're all really the same people.
Of course when they fall they fall on snow...

Re: So you think you`re fast?
I have an opinion here:
First, Steve Mckinney, Tamara's older brother, broke the 100 mph mark in the 70's. It was quite an accomplishment.
Speed skiing is a sport unto itself. It was in the winter olympics a few winters back. It is no longer an olympic sport, but is governed by the FIS. There are regulations on the course, racer certifications, and materials(skis, boots, bindings, plates, helmets, suits, etc...).
Someone said "speed is relative to what you are doing." Quite right, it is hard to compare speedboarding down some of the roads in the Alps to running Kitzbuehl/Hannekamn. Both require a very serious attitude and mind set.
But, I do want to say that I really do not think a longboard can go down a prepared speed skiing course: too steep(WAY steeper than you think) and way too fast. We talk about "air breaking," they do too, but they are "binded" to their skis and they lift real slowly, you would get blown back with out bindings. Think "tow in" surfing for relevance.
Go check out a World Cup speed event, dh, sgs,sg, and get a sense for the turns and speed over "injected snow." It is really just a glazed sheet of ice.
Longboarding is way cool, but skiing has been a way of life for me.

I agree, I've snowboarded down multiple black diamonds that I don't think I could stand on, they're sooo steep.

I think you're making lots of assumptions on what is and isn't possible. If I've learned anything in life it's that stuff is possible. I've never stood on top of a speedskiing hill and looked down so I'm not saying anything based on experience. But you should not be so quick to dismiss such thing as whether a longboarder could go down a speed skiing course (paved obviously).
99.99999% of times when anyone has said "that's too fast! It's impossible!" they have been soooooo wrong.
Take one speed-crazy speedboarder, give him like a 1 degree front truck and a 0 in the back, a paved downhill skiing track, and 5 years of practice and I think I would be VERY surprised if by the end of that time he was not going 250kmph. Maybe faster... a speedboarding tuck is better than a skiing tuck. One knee instead of two and aside from that it's the same thing.
You might think it's crazy now but another thing I have learned is that what the norm today is has nothing to do with what the norm tomorrow is.

Re: So you think you`re fast?
Snow is also a bit softer than asphalt. That's just my little ol' opinion.

Well yeah. LOL. I'm imagine it's insanely smooth ride minus the wind resistance. Though, I couldn't imagine going that fast... if you hit a tree or the wrong hump and get air, it's pretty much the end of that day.
I like sticking around 45mph and less...

Re: So you think you`re fast?
I'm pretty confident that I've been way faster on a snowboard in a beenie hat and down jacket than I'm ever likely to go in full leathers on a skateboard. I've also boarded down slopes as steep if not steeper than the one in the O.P.s video and I can honestly say that I wouldn't fall-line that #### for all the tea in china (unless I was being avalanched and it was a case of bomb or die). In Ski-ing/Snowboarding 'fast' is an entirely different term. They're incomparable in many ways with speedboarding, but in many others the appeal is similar so I can appreciate the relevance. Sick vid!

Re: So you think you`re fast?
Obviously there is a lot of hypothetical situations here, but one thing I DO know. Roads are made for driving. Speed skiing runs are not, hence the stupidly steep incline. This is why it is and will continue to be very hard (not impossible, I'm no mathematizard, so I dunno what you could find out if you had to time to do proper testing) to make a GOOD educated guess on how fast you can go on a skateboard vs. skis IF we had skateboarding runs that were at the same incline as speed skiing runs and were paved.
When you write that hypothetical situation like that, it seems a little drawn out and pointless in my opinion. Anyone agree?
