I like to run my downhill setups loose, and keep them versatile. Now that freeriding has become more and more popular, you're seeing a mix of disciplines that lend themselves to not just cranked trucks and little lean. Sure, when you're going 25+ through turns, the lean required for wheelbite would send you either flying off the board or into the pavement. However, (and especially with lower than 50* trucks) wheelbite becomes an issue when you take into account the varied riding styles that you'll see on "DH" boards. Also, not everyone has the liberty of having many setups. Wheelbite worries are especially relevant when you can only have one or two boards. Even more so when that board is a downhill topmount.
It's a bit hasty to say that "nobody who downhills" gets wheelbite on 75mm. That's not only a bit pompous, but it's also straight incorrect.
Just something to consider.
i think this is a super good point. i never go over 45mph, and most of my runs have me hitting corners at around 30-35mph, only some corners at around 40, so i don't need a super stable setup (maybe that means i'm a "wannabe downhiller," whatever, i'm having fun), that's why i've been running a topmount for a while now with 50* trucks, anything lower (in terms of truck geometry) and it kills the fun. in addition, i've found that i prefer having one speedboard for everything, rather than a board for going fast and drifty, a board for going fast and grippy, a board for slopestyle stuff, etc... so i like my one board to be pretty turny, and i just learn to be relatively stable on it. it's easier to maintain a simple quiver, and i like the simplicity of just having one go-to board for whatever i want to do that would call for the use of a speedboard.

Lol. All I'm saying is that I don't worry about wheelbite on my topmounts with 75mm wheels because it never happened. And the issue is a current one. You're talking about taking turns at 25mph, okay I'm talking about taking turns at 50mph. There is a big difference. I wouldn't want to be riding a topmount with trucks loose enough to wheelbite when I'm going 50mph+.
Also, I wasn't one of the kids that went out and bought a topmount speedboard and 75mm wheels when I was a wannabe downhiller. I was the wannabe downhiller that rode what I had and took it to its limits.
My buddy asked me to get him precisions for his Demonseed. He has never gone above 35mph and he never wants to because he complains that he doesn't have leathers and he needs them to go faster. That's understandable, but he is buying precisions before leathers. His deck is capable of speeds in excess of twice what he has already been to. That's my point. People say "I downhill, should I get 75mm wheels for my Mystery Model or will I wheelbite?" I say yes that's fine, get 75mm wheels, it won't bite. Then they do get wheelbite because their definition of downhilling is 25-35mph and they run their stuff stupid loose.
We need to get the lingo straightened out here so we all understand eachother. Freeriding is cool, why not just say "I freeride" if you're going 30mph instead of "I downhill."
I'm not sayin anything, I'm just sayin.

Re: your dh setup
Different styles. East coast has big fat straight roads. Cali has really slidy tech hills. You guys dont have to worry about turning, not that you would even be able to get wheelbite going 50+ unless you were riding a 35* or lower baseplate. So we do take very tight turns 25-40 all the time. WHeelbite is a prevalent issue, but seriously, with 50* trucks, its very hard to get wheelbite on a setup worthy of going down a hill.

Techy straight roads huh? lol
Max, I have to agree as a generalization. We have mostly straightish or sweeping downhill runs. You guys have many more very windy/turny roads, but there are of course straight roads on the West Coast, and super turny roads here.

Re: your dh setup
couldn't wait another month for the neme so i decided to see what would happen if mounted the trucks on the nose and tail of my crappy cruiser board. it's a little flexy but alright. i used a piece of metal that i found to reinforce the back, and it works as a stand. genius.

Think about this; three-hundred and eighteen turns in just over six miles as the crow flies! Oh yeah, did I mention the climbing and dropping altitudes of The Smoky Mountains? Switchback lovers heaven.

the roads are there, not something i would attempt.

Why don't you just shut the #### up and not care about anyone else but yourself, because you just seem like a douche who is acting like there are certain requirements to be a true downhiller. I've probably got more respect for those "wannabe downhillers" than you.

Lol, no it's just funny to me that people here at Penn State especially say "oh man, all I do is bomb hills. I have gone 45mph easily." Then I take them to a mellow hill thats like 30-35mph and they're petrified. The most annoying part is those kids also say "Yah I taught this one kid today how to ride. I taught him how to push and foot brake, and bomb some hills." And that person themself can't footbrake at a speed above 15mph. It probably annoys you that I say this because you're one of those people who say you downhill but you never broke 40mph.
I never meant to offend anyone or sound like a dick, I'm just annoyed because there are 50 some people registered for the longboard club here. 45 of them say that they downhill. 30 of those haven't even broken the mould of their wheels. Of those other 15, 1 of them has gone over 35mph, and NOBODY on this campus will ride a god damn hill with me.
