normally I can hit the apex rather nicely, but the road is absolutely covered with sand on the sides, so I do my best within the non-sandy section. it is a 2 lane road, and there is so much sand on the sides that it basically becomes a one lane road. so grabbing is kinda necessary when the sand is here, once its gone this will no longer be a problem, but id like to learn how to handle it now.

the turn is between 30-40 mph, depending on where i take the hill from. and i would predrift, and i have, but i dont like killing that much speed just for this turn...it doest require it. i think when i grab rail i get a little wobbles, and then instead of riding them on, i try to correct with my hand, which just makes it worse.

I got the wobbles due to an odd truck setup where my rear truck was too loose. I quickly dropped into a coleman slide. I wasnt prepared for the slide due to the sudden nature of the even so my footing wasnt the best. I slipped off the board at the end of the slide because of my footing and got a tiny bit of rash but things could have be A LOT worse.
Ride them out if you can, otherwise slide.
Man,right when I was just reading this post about wobbles I ate a Fortune Cookie. When I read it I really got ###ing surprised. "When you're prepared, the difficulties don't appear."
It kinda fits in this Speed Wobble thing, when you're relaxed and mentally prepared, the wobbles don't show up.Dang,I hate these Chinese people! They always guess things right.

How in the world does grabbing rail have anything to do with the amount of friction between your wheels and the road? You're still turning the same amount, throwing the same amount of centripetal acceleration into the turn. Hand placement on the board has nothing to do with how hard you can grip a turn.

Unless you are lifting your outside wheels off the ground... But that's not good.

because grabbing rail usually isnt just grabbing your board, you pull your board up and use it as a stability point while your center of gravity is off your board. if you keep all 4 wheels on the ground while grabbing rail the majority of the time you will be pulling on your trucks more, making your wheels turn more.
taking out slides completely if you dont grab rail you have more weight on top of your board making it have more traction and your trucks will only turn as much as they can, grabing rail will make your trucks turn a greater angle making your wheels turn at a greater angle there for slowing you down, not always much but if you are trying to draft someone on a turn or pass it keeps speed.
if you dont belive me go to the nearest sweeper around your area, try hitting it full speed in tuck, then try hitting it fullspeed while grabbing. Feel the difference for yourself.

...or just don't skitch.
it's really just a better option.

holy crap!!! damn, if i ever got ran over id consider myself lucky to come out with just a dislocated shoulder.
would u get the same effect from hanging onto a ski rope attached to a car? ive never done it before cause im afraid of the car stopping and the rope wont exactly stop me...

get some slide gloves and a helmet
learn how to do slides and stop yourself at high speeds before you go out and bomb some hills with no ability to stop

Get safety gear and train,it's all about you,not about the ride.

Re: Technique Discussion
as for hardware, a stiff deck, randal 180's, and decently rolling wheels are all you need
get a helmet, and make some slide gloves. wear kneepads. they suck, i know, but wear them.
like people here have said... learn to footbrake, learn to slide. find a hill near you and start at the bottom, go higher and higher as you get more comfortable and keep with it. remember, the best thing to practice as a starter is stopping.
so learn to footbrake, learn to slide.
the rest will come with time.

Invest in safety gear. Or be like me an just buy some gloves. When I started out I had the shittest #### and loaded slide gloves. Get any ####### speedboard and wheels that move with randals and grizzlies and fly down some mountains. Ride safe ride hard.
