Re: My research on Speedometers and GPS
what if your follow car has gps in it then you could take the speedometer and gps reading them average them and get a pretty accurate answer

Re: My research on Speedometers and GPS
I tested my prototype speedometer today...
accurate to 23 mph which was when we couldn't hand pedal the bike anymore (which was used as source for speed). Too all my math it should be accurate above 75 mph (120kph) and it will cost around 50.

Re: My research on Speedometers and GPS
The Garmin Edge 305 is what I use. Martin uses the Edge 705. I think the Edge 305 is really all you need. The 705 adds microSD, colour display, wireless transmission, and a navigational button. But the 705 is bulkier and doesn't add more than just cost! It doesn't even increase accuracy.
The Edge 305 has a barometric altimeter to help with elevation but this is still a bit hokey and for most GPS, but it's better than the Forerunner series. I would recommend reading up on the Edge 305 and giving it a try. I think for everything that's out there now it's probably one of the better options.
I would suggest you also use it with your computer to upload tracks and the data to verify your speeds as errors do come up in readings here and there. Garmin provides a program with the GPS but if you have a Mac then you can use Ascent, a really wicked program to help you stay on top of stuff. Your plots will let you see speed vs time to pick out any sudden spikes in the plot that may be reading as false top speeds. Perfect graphs should be smooth unless your crashing into stuff!
The Edge 305 lets you see the current accuracy in your current location, see current speed, record top speed, average speed, time, distance, and pretty much everything you need. Now use that with your computer program and your set!
I would personally recommend getting the Edge 305. A small piece of advice is that the Edge 205 may be a $100 cheaper but it does not have the Barometric Altimeter to help with elevation. The Edge 305 comes in a few different kits the simplest being one that comes with a heart sensor (which is pretty neat).
Hope that helps!

Re: My research on Speedometers and GPS
Just got my Garmin Edge 305 in the mail today!
I'm going to go skate some hills and see how it works.
Stoked!
I also emailed Martin Siegrist to see about getting one of the sleeves for it. I really hope I can get one. This GPS is the perfect size for my front foot!

Re: My research on Speedometers and GPS
i've tried the forerunner 101, 201, 301, and 305 --
I like the 101 best for distance recording because it uses AA batteries you can replace out on the road.
the others after the FR101 are all rechargeable, which is convenient if you can always get back to AC charge after roughly 12-14 hours.
the 301 boasted a heart rate monitor but they were selling them for the same price as 201's last I checked because the heart monitors are heavily reported (via user reviews) to be almost useless.

Re: My research on Speedometers and GPS
my street reached 25 before I slid to a stop 3/4 of the way down (don't want to slide into the busier road again). This thing is super easy to customize settings and reset.
I have it set to show current speed, max speed, time, and grade %. I'm using the zip ties that came with it to attach to my laces, but it's really awkward and the zip ties keep digging into my ankle. It's ok for now, though.
Mine came with the heart monitor and cadence monitor, but I'm not going to use them.
I like this thing a lot so far. Waaay better than my more expensive handheld GPS that was a pain to read, customize, and reset. It was also shady to check whenever I was going fast because I'd have to take my hand from behind my butt and bring it to my face, and the thing was so big it would obstruct my view while i squinted at it to find my speed.
Now I just glance down at my foot.

Re: My research on Speedometers and GPS
For those of you with the Garmin Legend (and i presume the Etrex H as well), any problems with signal can usually be fixed by turning ENABLING WAAS in the settings menu. This is a Wide Area Augmentation System that corrects satellite signals and gives you greater accuracy on your GPS device.
I have a Garmin Legend and it works wonders.

boom! your going to want to read the airspeed micro sensor V3 and click the view manual to see how the dang thing works. its going to talk about model airplanes and blah blah blah, but its the same idea where the sensor measures how much wind pressure hits it and it converts this into mph or kmph, it may work, may not for longboarding but maybe with some imagination and magic.....

how about you test that out with your imagination and magic, and then let us know how it goes
then you can say "screw your GPS" all you want
