Jaxxx is that sleeve injection molded or just a vacformed piece of plastic? I've seen them on martin and his site and have been wondering. I guess I should shoot him an email, it'd be nice to talk to another IDer about skating.

It's neither actually. It's plastic/fabric cut by Martin. It's pieced together quite ingeniously actually. And it's more durable than I expected. I was kind of disappointed when I got it and felt how flimsy it was, but it's held up through a couple crashes and some scrapes with pavement at speed. I like it a lot. It's really convenient.

For anyone interested in buying a GPS from Garmin's eTrex line, Amazon has cut their prices. You save up to 50%. I'm thinking about getting a Legend, but does anyone know if it (or what GPS can) tells you how much distance you've traveled in a trip?

Well I would, but for one Im broke and two, why would I want to know how fast im going. I dont understand whats this big whoop about how fast everybody goes... everybody is on some big ego trip,, ERR yeah I went 64mph AAHH well, i went 64.4 Ive gone fast than you... Why dont you just skate! And if you go fast you go fast simple as that. Heres a study, How much time people on the Fish skate, compared to how much time people spend sitting at there computers trolling websites waisting time, when they could actually be getting experience on the road . hmm lets start. ive got 30 posts, and this guy talking to me has close to 450.... hmm....
And as much as I would like to use my science degree and use the imaginary free time I have, well i just dont care...

SOOO much whining on this website... no wonder im never on it.

GPS are good for training purposes.. they can tell you a lot about your exit speed in corners. How far and where you've gone. Mapping you favourite roads, etc. I just haven't bothered to buy one cos of the cost..and the fact that it's not an essential item, but they are useful if you ride a lot..and are looking to improve or view your progress..

(P.S: These people with like 2000 posts intrigue me too, you're not alone. And WTF is rep power anyway?)

. yeah I can understand that.. but alls I hear about on websites like these are how fast they went using there gps, and not hey! check out this cool road i mapped or check out my exit speed on these corner... you know? People(not everyone but most) buy these 4 or 500 dollar gps devices and only use ONE of the MANY functions on it... and if your only using the one function why not look into experimenting with the pitot idea or some other means of cheaper speed reading??

Who cares what everyone does on the fish? If i wanted to spend 400 on a GPS to find out my speed then why can't i? My money......plus trash talking is fun. I personally would be one of "those people" that would say..."Haha i went 2mph faster than you"

Lighten up buddy.....were all just here to have fun and skate regardless how many hours we spend doing useless things on the net lol I do think it's rediculous to spend that much money for SOME people.....like beginners, but who cares lol Not my money.....not your money, doesnt really matter in the end.

    Go skate and be happy

PS. For the record i don't own a GPS or any kind of speedometer

awesome to see people hating on teh internetz -- while posting on the internetz.

baron if you're really not interesting in measuring distance / speed / lap time / mileage, then a thread with "GPS" in the title is probably not the thread for you. but if you do build a working model of this theoretical yet untested "pitot" which blows away all the Garmins, post it here and make lots of money off the silverclit collective.

btw, garmin 101's are $70 off eBay.

    the red baron:

i called the company with this device and talked to guy there.. he said that this device should give an accurate reading for ground speeds... the device will log your highest speed... if you get the log program you can view the entire run... im into rc stuff as well... this idea has a good potential to work... im going to talk to there tech support tomorrow to see about setting it up on a board... i also told the guy i talked to today specifically what i wanted to use it for and they were interested ... i know its not going to take alot of juice to run.. a small lipo battery would run the thing forever... ill let you know what tech support says tomorrow... if we can come up with a good way to set this up ill be trying this product in a couple weeks.... so far it seems good to go

If you have an iPhone you're willing to risk keeping on you while skating, there's an app that you can download for free that will give you your top speed, average speed, current speed, etc. I used it the other day, works pretty well.

that falls back in with the gps problems... they are somewhat accurate... and somewhat consistent... but they can be consistently wrong to which makes them good for a round about figure but nothing to go on for a fact

After reading this thread I decided to give it a try with my Geko 201. It has a screw hole in the back for mounting it to a handlebar bracket or something so I bought a 98 cent package of hair clips at a craft store and screwed one to the back. I drove to my favorite run; clipped it to my shoe laces and I was ready to go.

There has been some discussion here of placing the unit in a location where it can be read in transit - only do this if you want risk your ass for inaccurate information. You can't stare at it continuously to ensure you see your top speed; you can't even glance at it without risking a crash. I tried it on the first two runs and nearly hit a curb once. I guess it wouldn't be so bad on a straight run but I was only doing 28 - 32 mph and it was too fast to be gawking at my foot. If your GPS unit doesn't record a maximum speed don't bother using it for this.

The other thought I had is that this could be a temptation to push yourself too hard. That is, if you're determined to do a certain speed and coming up short you might be tempted to try something beyond your capabilities.

My mounting method was just a quickie; I'm sure someone can come up with something better.

P.S. - I wonder how long it will take for someone to add that last sentence to his signature.

Why would you want to know how fast you went?

    hmmmm,
Did a change in wheel, bearing or application of special sauce on said bearings really make a difference?

Should I try that grade? What speed am I confident/comfortable at now? Experience has taught me in many areas of life, you need to eat it in small bites. Biting off more than you can chew rarely ends nicely.

frinstance - This weekend I got some new wheels in with a smaller contact patch, a little harder and maybe faster than the speedvents I was already running and felt fast on. The new ones were good for 2mph more on the same hill, same board, same wind.
I then used a different board with different wheels. It wasn't the fastest of all the boards ridden 2 days earlier but is a favorite. First couple of runs was comparable to the first board. Then I swapped out the bearings with the same brand but that I'd added some snapon teflon lube. A couple of break-in passes then went for test purposes and hit almost 3mph faster on a relatively short and mild grade. Definitely worked and saves me a few dollars in the long run since I can get freebies from my buddy's wife who works at SnapON.

Garmin Forerunner - it's fun and also gives a little guidance in my tweaking.

... almost sprained my finger due to speed wobble (Fusrodah)

... wheels need to be round to roll well. (aloysius)
