Re: Comet- A freeride/fun time deck
this deck has me so STOKED, I have my randals w/venomz and pink powerballs, new hardware, new bearings and fresh roll of grip sitting on my dresser waiting for the deck to arrive. I might buy 2 nosebones to protect the nose, but im not sure yet.
would anyone agree that powell nosebones would be a WIN on this deck?
comet fsm, mhs hybrids, 80a drifters or solid red kryptos
clutch knuckle duster, prandal 42, 76 flywheels or stimulus
rayne avenger, kahalanis, lime zigs or 80a 4prez
loaded dervish, randals, lime freerides or whatever isnt used
lbl old school dancer, randals, potang 4prez 83a

Re: Comet- A freeride/fun time deck
I would suggest against the nosebones if you're going to drill them in... The nose is already strong enough not to need them, so the added drilling to make holes for the powells would probably weaken it more than a hit to the straight deck would.
Otherwise that setup sounds great, you'll have a lot of fun.
ps. My friend Gray drew up some sketches for artwork, Once they're put into illustrator i'll post them...

Re: Comet- A freeride/fun time deck
This board looks amazing even as a proto, but I just want to know what
comet means by "a tad of torsional flex".
I have a loaded pintail as my only board, and its very flexy, is this board going to have
any flex or is it a stiffer board?

The flex in this board is in NO way comparable to any loaded board. If you're used to a flexy Loaded, it will be like standing on a rock.
@jason: you described it as a snowboard on wheels and i think that fits it quite well. With all my other boards i had to prepare slides a little. Now with the deep concave combined with the rocker i just do it. Instead of thinking a lot about technique i can just use brute force which is really fun

A couple graphic ideas below, I stuck with the purple/yellow theme since that seem to be the original suggestion. I may have some more if I can get to drawing them.

This board is looking great!
How do you guys feel about it when just cruising around? Do you guys enjoy it at lower speeds and cruising/carving or is it more of a hill/slide only deck?

I agree - that is a great question.
Couple of quick stories.
There are 3 people at the factory that dont really skate. They all love the board and I can see how their balance looks more centered on this board than any of the other ones that I have seen them stand on. Even just cruising down the hall or to lunch... they feel more confident and able to stand and carve at low flat land kicking speeds...
Also my cousin just got a job that he needs a board for to get from the train to his office... He has an old 40 inch Comet with a kicktail and likes to roll on the flats and mellow hills. After talking yesterday, I decided that I would send him a prototype b/c of what he said he was interested in instead of a smaller longboard... Being low to the ground and easy to turn, I think that it will make a great commuter / low speed carver...
Lastly - I skate a lot of terrain from transitions, city stuff, to speed runs. I usually dig riding street decks or pool type shapes to roll around on... from pt A to B
I also have never been really attracted to the so called dancing thing personally (although very impressed by it)
Funny what a new board will do but I am finding myself effortlessly cross stepping, standing backwards, riding switch and goofing around like I do when I am surfing a long board. I had the FSM up on campus the other night and found it easy enough to weave through people and cracky sidewalks and no big deal to carry into my appointment.
I know that seems like a lot of information but oddly enough I have been pondering this a lot since Monday...

This thing is a breeze to push, its low and the rocker gives you a balanced/centered feeling. It carves really nice, the length, width and concave made it pretty nimble, and you do not have to go fast to enjoy this deck. If you want to go fast, it will handle it no problem.

Re: Comet- A freeride/fun time deck
I have attached a summary of the evaluations from the test pilots.
I tried to simplify the feedback as much as possible.
The Evaluation Sheets were all between 3 and 5 pages each, which gave me around 65 pages of very well thought out and thorough feed back. Thanks to you all...
The spread sheet that I attached has 3 columns :
The first one is a category that is linked to the questions asked.
Second is an extreme summary of notes. Very simplified to allow for quantification of very subjective analysis.
The third is frequency. The frequency is the amount something was stated.
For example: If four people rode the board with Randal 180 50* there are four 1's in that box (1111)
If six people did not get wheel bite there are six 1's in that box (111111)
and so on.
*** The frequency is only linked to column 1,,,((((( not the notes column)))).
The notes that were included seemed enough of a trend to include.
The major changes that seem logical based on the feed back are:
1. extend platform .5 inches on each end. (keep WB and Length the same)
2. Wheel wells (probably exactly what Jorgen drew)
3. Harder angle where the nose and tail meet the platform to allow for more clearence (Jorgen and Evan provided drawings)
4. change drop mounts to fit more trucks
Now the tricky part:
5 people are asking for more rocker....
5 people are asking for more concave
that is significant but less than 50%
5. Proposed change: give the board more concave toward ends and outer edges of platform.
This may give more perceived rocker and concave w/o modifying overall shape too much.
In lieu of that proposed change, we would not modify concave or rocker based on majority of people being stoked.
It seems like the current concave has struck a balance between deep enough to lock you in and not soo deep that your feet get cramped...
The mold change is significant enough that we should all make sure that it is necessary and give commentary if you feel strongly either way.
Alright that is all for now...
I am stoked that Blair has submitted that first artwork - super rad work!
Lets keep the submissions rolling in!
Cheers

The one with the politician raising his hands looks absolutely awesome. It's great that it has all the FSM names on the deck, perhaps a bit more purple-ish color but no matter. Looks awesome

This seems perfect for a funtime deck, not hinting at any specific discipline if that makes sense?
I personally think that a lot of concave is overrated for any board thats non-dh specific

Re: Comet- A freeride/fun time deck
my friend raised a good point that it shouldn't be lakers purple and yellow because that's too overplayed. It should be a rich purple like the middle top one in this picture, and like a neon yellow, not mustard...
As for concave/rocker, I wouldn't really complain if they were increased, but I like them just the way they are. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I LOVE mine for just cruising and fooling around, I`ve had a couple dry-ish days here and have been able to use mine outside a parking garage for change.
And oh, I`m selling my Dervish, I like my FSM proto way more.

I agree, I wrote in the eval sheet that a little more concave would be nice, but I would be totally happy with it as is. This deck just gets better every time I use it.
