Ollieing long decks
I've got a 44" deck that I'd love to be able to kickflip, but I just can't get it off the ground.
I can kickflip a kickflipper, and I can kickflip a pool deck, but not the big boy.
any suggestions?

Re: Ollieing long decks
For me, I have a big board too, its around 42 or so, and its a way different way to ollie.
On a shortboard you kick/slide./jump all @ the same time but the board is short so it works fairly well.
On a longer deck such as mine and yours you kinda have to push the tail down(assuming u have a pintail or something with a tail), jump kinda forward(you need to get that front end down, and its farther away from you so you need to get there) and instead of sliding ur front foot up right away, what I do is jump first, and then "push" the front end of the board down.
It's the same motions, they are just in a different order. Push>Jump>"push"

Re: Ollieing long decks
Big long decks require deliberate action. You need super duper pop and very good timing to make it work.

Re: Ollieing long decks
Also the lighter the wheels and trucks are the easier it is. Even with shortboard trucks and wheels (try it!), doubling the wheel base doubles the leverage the front weight has against your back foot.

Re: Ollieing long decks
It takes a lot of practice. I have a Gravity Mini-Carve I was working on kickflipping (42") and I have to say, it was quite a few tries until I landed one.
In my experience, you have to push your foot down, instead of sliding it off the edge. Think kick, not flick.

Re: Ollieing long decks
the board has a real kicktail (ollieing a pintail? are you nuts?) and I guess that just means I need to practice more.

Re: Ollieing long decks
it takes practice. I can do it on my pintail, but it takes a while to actually get it to go high. at first it might seem like it never gets off the ground.

Re: Ollieing long decks
I can stick fakie varial kickflips on a 46'' Gravity Carve -- which means you can kickflip a 44'' plank. Keep practicing, and you'll get it.

Re: Ollieing long decks
if it has a kick tail then it's the same technique only bigger motions.
if not you kinda gotta throw the back end down then throw your front foot and a lot of weight at the nose to level it out. I can get like 6 inches on my nelson drop speedboard like that.
wdyt?

46'' broke, and since they stopped making the rpm 39 i've moved onto the jp38.. this is a little sample from last fall, not the 46'' -- but a little sampler.

as a general rule double kicks have really short wheelbases making them generally unsuitable for DH. Even Louis P. uses a fatty double kick to downhill on. (meaning that while he DHs on a double kick A- it's huge so the wb is reasonable, B- he's better than you)
not impossible but it's likely to get hairy fast going downhill if you're riding a board that you can really pop.

Re: Ollieing long decks
My boy Will took my Sector 9 Channel 9 (40.5" X 9.25") down some 30mph hills last night

Then we loosened the trucks up a bit and went sliding. Standie 180s, suicides, pendys, whatever...
it was set up with stock Mission 1 trucks, tracker bushings, and yellow stims
