alright guys, so apparently i suck at dancing. i've been practicing on my heist, as well as dying on my heist. i just have one question, should i try to learn FIRST on a dancer specific board or what? it just seems since my heist is already so responsive, i can hardly move without the board going insane. if not, then i just need a hell of a lot more practice
The Heist is very dancable. I suggest working on your balance, since that is the main skill with dancing. Ride with one foot, switch feet, ride it facing backwards, ride it forwards, jump around on it, embrace the carve, love it.
After you're comfortable moving around on the board, you can focus on the specific steps and spins and all the other fun stuff. Stick with it, bro: after the first two weeks, it's easy, and you'll totally be in love with it. Don't give up !
P.S. Make sure you're carving the board while dancing: it helps your balance, makes you look more stylin', and it's infinitely more enjoyable =D
I definately think that you should do some practicing and learn a good amount of tricks before getting a dancing board. Make sure you really like dancing first. It would suck to buy a board and then realize it's not the board that makes you good at dancing
Tighten your trucks first. I find this helps most people learn at the beginning. Once you have it down, loosey goosey and learn other tricks loosey goosey.

practice, i can dance on my 32" commuter board, its harder to learn on a smaller board but if you do, by the time you get a dancer it will be amazingly easy
The mating dance of the elusive longboarder is the cross-step into G-turn. So break out the Dancer, show her your big wood, and start making her wet with your mad dancing.
Wear pads.
It may sounds stupid, but when you're learning pads can give you that boost of confidence to push you to do things you wouldn't normally do. You might just find that things get easier along the way.
