Re: Where to start?
it sounds like your dedicated, and thats the biggest thing to progression.
longboarding is a skill, and like any other skill it takes practice and practice and practice.
genius is 1% inspiration, 99%perspiration.
just keep skating, and keep pushing yourself.
find out if there is a local scene in your area, try to find other people to ride with, especially if they are better than you. nothing forces quick learning like playing catch up.

Re: Where to start?
Remember to have fun. If your only reason for skating is to be as good as these guys you might get discouraged. These guys have been skating for 13 years, and they just do it for fun.
other than that you are on the right track, just keep watching videos and try some of the tricks that you see. eventualy you'll find some that aren'.t too difficult

Re: Where to start?
just look at the trick tip vids on the loaded newsletter channel. that's where i learned like everything. try to focus on one thing at a time rather than trying 3-4 tricks at once. spend maybe a week doing cross steps and get them really clean.

Re: Where to start?
there aren't any hills where you live, but are there parking garages? find a nice empty parking deck and practice carving on the downward slope. they're awesome because you can just ride the elevator to the top after each run. bring friends along too, there aren't many things I'd rather be doing on a friday night than riding parking decks with friends.

Re: Where to start?
Yeah like the other guys said, longboarding's a lot more fun with some buds. try to get some of ur friends into it if u don't have any friends who already board. i board with a few friends on a regular basis and we're always helping each other learn. oftentimes i find that i dont only learn from them when they deliberately try to teach me a trick; just being around other boarders doing their thing pushes me to learn more to show off to my friends next time we board together.
As for ur carving problem, ur probably either not carving on a steep enough hill or carving past perpendicular to the road which'll kill all ur momentum if it isn't a steep enough hill.
But exactly like all the other guys said, the most important part about longboarding is to just enjoy what ur doing, don't get down on urself if u can't nail all the tricks in the book at the drop of a hat. Just concentrate on little stuff at a time, and dont rush a ton of new tricks at once, remember to just make small steps when learning new tricks. Since you can cross step somewhat, just keep practicing that until u have it down and then move on to another trick that catches ur eye. watch some videos and start to practice it, and gradually u'll start accumulating a wide variety of some pretty neat tricks.

I have tried lots of different things.
I don't really have any hills where I live. I can't carve worth #### as I eventually slow to a stop and have to push again which is starting to make me think I'm not doing it correctly. I weigh 120 pounds if that matters.
I can cross step but it looks very awkward and like #### because it won't help me carve because I don't know how to carve.
I have busted my knee open several times this week trying to get a nose manual down.
I almost gave up, but then I see these videos of people with dervishes doing all this stuff so easy and I want to go longboard.
What trick/ technique should I try to do? What did you first learn how to do?
help me

i started carving, then i went to cross-stepping, then sliding, etc...
for carving you just need to do really long (or short) fluid turns and when you start to slow down just pump a little. for dancing that just takes experience and getting to know how u like to do it as long as you remember to keep your toes pointed forward.
Longboarding's all I know and I got to do something

Tricks are over rated.
Learn effective maneuvers such as transitions, manualing up curbs, riding off curbs, and shutdown slides.

Re: Where to start?
As far as usefulness is concerned, flattops can get you up and down pretty much any curb or small stair set. They are tuff at first but soon youll get better at landing on the board and a better feel on how to throw the board back under you.
once you get that down you can move on to handflip tricks like the tiger claw and boneflip that are fairly easy and really fun

Re: Where to start?
Learn the basics first,pushing,carving,footbraking
get those down and start going for the harder stuff
what good is it being able to nose manual if you
can't steer or stop the board?
Best of luck
