keep the weight on your trailing edge, you will have to get good at judging your wheels as well. Sounds like they are suddenly gripping during the slides
The sage, Longboard Buddha once said, "A tree spends 100% of its lifetime in a static environment and only after its reincarnation as a deck is it allowed to move at fast speeds...
when allowed, the wood will give thankless service if
    allowed to flow."

im guessing your pulling on the board too hard with your hand which tips it over. Try only resting your hand on the side and not pulling

lemon, i believe he is doing a stand up slide.....which is why he said powerslide.

Malakai is right, just keep weight on your trailing edge and if you snowboard just do that just you need more UMPH.......i find it helps to sort of lock up your knees

    hope this helps

sorry to jack this thread, but i need help with doing soft slides. im able to slide sharply, and come to a stop, and i can slide pretty long, but im having trouble doing slow slides. look at this video. the last clip (3rd clip) is me trying to slide into a driveway. whenever i try, i get about a second of slide and it feels like my wheels suddenly grip, which slings me off the board. http://www.putfile.com/media.php?n=Final-Fall-Video56

Try loosening your trucks it will allow you to get a lower center of gravity on the slide, balance will come with repitition.
