I have 70mm wheels that are pretttty soft...78A. I have decided it's time to learn to slide. Is it even worth attempting with these wheels yet, or should I dust off the skateboard for this? I just watched "Lords of Dogtown" so I finally have a better idea of what sliding is, but I still kinda can't wrap my brain around it. Today when I was out skating I started to get comfortable with turning heelside and riding crouched down. I just don't want to pick up bad habits by learning on wheels that are too soft. Whaddya think?

It would definitely be easier to learn on a shorter deck with harder wheels.
soft wheels are good when learning....when you get a set of harder wheels and a dedicated slide deck it will be cake. so just go out there and try it...just don't grab the rail of the board
edit: here is a older vid of me sliding on some 78a's

Cool thanks...yeah I have a normal shortboard but I'm actually thinking of modifying it to be more like a longboard, so I dunno. OR I might end up just buying a whole new setup and working off that for the modded board. My skateboard has really old wheels, I think they're Spitfire and I'm not sure of the durometer but they're obviously harder than 78, probably like 90. I think they're 52mm? I used to be able to tell the size of a wheel just by eyeballing it but I feel like I hardly see any wheels smaller than 54 anymore!

nothings wrong with it it just isn't all that safe most of the time....and its way easier to do a coleman with your arm up... but if you want to grab the rail thats cool. as long as your skating and sliding oh and nicotine according to you cliff coleman is misinformed??? what
im sure you have seen this vid YouTube - How To Coleman Slide

Well he says don't grab between your legs which you shouldn't do, most people don't grab between their legs, they grab behind their rear knee. I do my colemans that way and I haven't had issues with it.

oh thats what i meant.....i guess i should have been more specific. sorry
Have slide gloves, that is key #1. Easiest way is to use your standard shortboard setup. If you plan on modding it, don't even worry. You'll only need a couple sessions on it as is to get the feel for kicking the wheels out.
Learn toeside slides first, so go fast (4-5 HARD pushes, or down a hill), crouch down, put both hands down in front of your feet toeside, carve hard and push out both feet (back foot a bit harder first, then once the wheels kick out slightly then even pressure on both feet). Get fully extended into a full pushup position. Keep your butt low to be safe (no bending at the waiste!!!).
Once you're used to that, then give the Coleman slide a shot, as shown in the Cliff Coleman video above. Rolling both knees over is the key, you don't even have to push out the board I find.
Then take more speed, commit even more, and try on the 78a wheels. It will be harder, and you may feel that you have to relearn...but you'll know the feeling of sliding. Just go faster and it'll happen. Oh, and on soft wheels I usually have to grab the rail around my back leg to Coleman, but on less grippy wheels I use my arm up. It depends on the situation, both ways are safe I find. Just don't grab between your knees.
