The purpose of carving is to slow yourself down, and to have fun or to turn from place to another. To do it well, push down hard on either your heels or toes and lean out over top of them, not too far though. Once the board has reached the distance you want to go in that direction, turn the other way. Keep doing this for as long as you want. Just go out and push yourself.

the turning slows you down in many ways. first, because your torqueing on the wheels to move, you loose some momentume there. second, by turning drasticly on a hill, you will substantually decrease the steepness of hill you are going on, reducing acceleration. and in some casses, you will have wheels struggling to stay gripped, or failing, which slows you down becasue of the slide or torque.

ok its simple, you turn as hard as you can one way until you are close to being perpendicular to the hill, then with all your force, you turn the other way, until you are agian almost perpindicular. try it on a smaler hill first, becasue many a time ive not been abole to turn back in time from speed and just run right into the curb.

Dont start out the hill bombin it or you will start going out of your speed potential, instead start off with slow big carves and if you feel uncomfortable get in the habbit of draggin 1 toe on the ground to slow down (the back toe, right in front of your back wheel but not touching the wheel). Although toe dragging can slow you to a point it is by no means for stopping and it is harsh on shoes so try and break the habbit by practicing lots and getting better! another thing "Carving" is just turning one way then switching back the other way, the idea behind it is to make an extreme turn one way and cut back the other way which will in turn slow you down somewhat. Longboarding is a total mind over matter thing, you just need to keep riding and getting used to the speed, it will come to you.
edit: Just as a side not, pivot trucks are fine for learning on......

carving is not so much brakes as it is like compression braking, it will control your speed, not stop you on a dime.
a good way to get it down is take a hil your comfortable with and see how slow you can go down it. also, the roots: seed 2.0 will casue you to dance on the board which will make you carve, seeing as you have enough rythem. chicks digg it if you can carve in style too.
tempation or blessing? We shall soon find out....
