Default How to BRAKE with a long board

Could someone help me out here; when i'm cruising down hill and you have to make a sudden stop, how can you brake? 'cause just jumping of my board hurts a lot when landing!

    Thx you guys,
    greetzz

well what speed are you going? aroud 0-20 you can footbrake ie taking you BACK foot off he board and (lightly at first) drag it across the ground.
at 20+ you can make some deep carves to get yourself slow enough to footbrake. that's what i like to do. some other ppl may have diffrent techniques but that works for me. just don't footbrake at to fast a speed or you'll faceplant.
now back to non religious * where\'s my bong

If you think you\'ll fall, you will.
If you think you\'ll make it, you will.

You can footbrake at any speed if your balance and technique is correct...had to at about 35mph to slow down for a car pulling out in front of me
Progress isn\'t made by early risers. It is made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something.

My buddy stumbled on a neat little trick...

let your back foot hang off, and just tip it off the side and it'll scrape on the ground & slow ya down & you can still keep both feet on the board.

I figured that out LOOOONG ago. There's only one problem with it. With a small sliding surface moving along the ground, if you hit a small imperfection you will break your ankle promptly.

I can't tell you how many pairs of Vans we used to all go through because the toe corner was completely gone. I still wreck Vans and Tevas with the same technique, and it's very stable but not nearly as powerful as full on footbraking.

I can't imagine how you'd hurt an ankle doing it: your toe is trailing, not leading.

The thing is, this really only works if you're rolling straight or in a frontside carve, so it better not be your only arrow in the quiver.

Dude you gotta watch the Supaflex videos again (I`m assuming you already have due to your ridiculously high post count). The one of the guy bombing through traffic. He`s a mongo pusher, and footbrakes mongo. Its the coolest thing as his center of gravity is off the board. Tell me that isn`t the coolest thing. Then go try and footbrake with your front foot. Its a blast!

High speed foot braking is not that hard to do. This summer at Top Challenge we were stopping in a short area at speeds of 35-45. I had new shoes and they were screaming all day. There was so much rubber on the road by the end of the day.

if all of the above fails you might need to just get going slow enough were you can hop off the board and start running. The best way to do it if you are not sure you are going to land on your feet is to turn the board in a dirrection where you are going to make a softer landing. When you step off the board step your back foot ahead, and your font foot back so the board goes back and run it off.

NEVER HOP OFF YOUR BOARD IF YOU ARE GOING FASTER THAN YOU
    CAN RUN!

Footbraking and sliding are much better ways to slow down.
Another option mentioned above is carving rail to rail to reduce your
speed enough to footbrake or slide.

If you jump off your board going faster than you can run you will get
hurt. This was apparently noticed by the original poster, hence the
reason for this thread in the first place.

Svarteld has designed an asymetrical deck that is shaped specifically
for the technique that you described. It has multiple foot postitions
for pushing, foot braking, toe drag speed reduction, ect.

It is also SUPER low, so that makes it easier also.

    It's a very unique design.

Check out his trucks and bushings, too.

    Check it out here, you'll have to scroll down to see the Asymetrical deck;

if i'm just out for a cruisy carve, then footbraking all the way.

I'll still skate with my gloves on though so i can bust out a slide in a time of panic!

powerslide/standing slides are good at slowing yah down, and they make people wonder just what the hell you're doing.
