Go out, learn to shortboard, and then everything else in longboarding will become easy as pie.
Except for slalom.
But everything else.

With shortboarding...You learn how to manipulate the board however you want. You learn how to control the board, and make sure the board doesn't control you. You learn to use your feet like you can use your hands...You can catch the board, spin it, jump it, everything, once you get good enough. So if you can make the board come off your feet, do crazy things, and come back to it, or lead it away with one foot, jump with another, spin it like you would with your hands, and come back on.....I'm sure you can do something as simple as boardwalking.
I'm not saying you literally should go out and learn to shortboard so you can boardwalk.....Well, actually that was really just a useless paragraph that doesn't pertain to the topic at all.
Shortboarding rocks though.

You missed the point.
Shortboarding isn't about Bam, to me, it's about control.
Longboarding is extremely easy compared to vert skating, shortboarding...It's pretty much the easiest.
I've shortboarded for close to 4 years now, and now when I step on a skateboard, it doesn't feel like a separate object to me. I'm a part of it, and I can use it like I use one of my limbs. This is thanks to shortboarding.
Which teaches you better control? Carving down a hill, or kickflipping off a ramp and catching it 5 feet in the air? Then experimenting with different speeds that the board flips at, and different heights that you catch it at. The adding grabs to the picture, and flipping the board to your hand, catching it, sticking it back under your feet, and rolling away? Having done both a whole lot, I'd say the latter.
Shortboarding isn't about the mainstream. Shortboarding is about all the same things as longboarding. It's just a different feel.

Also...I've noticed this during my months at silverfish.
I highly doubt most of you guys know HALF the stuff these shortboarders do. You'd be VERY suprised, and I have to think amazed.
Do yourself a favor...Go to the store, and buy an up to date Thrasher, or a new skate video. First off, you'd realize what respect some of these guys deserve. Bam Margera is not very good at skateboarding in the scheme of things. However, if you saw Jamie Thomas, or Eric Koston, or Rodney Mullen...Danny Way...Ali Boulala...Any of these guys, you'd respect shortboarding a bit more than now. Secondly, they don't talk about their new Bam t-shirts or their sponsorship...They talk about going out, going on road trips, skating hard, having fun with their friends, running from cops, messing with security guards.....Same as longboarders. Sometimes I think some people think up enemies or differences that don't exist.

dude, relax it was a joke. I think you'd be suprised how many of us know exactly what your talking about,
I'm also kinda insulted you think I don't know who mullen is and besides, I like Ray Barbee out of all of the names thrown around in the past two decades. He's skilled, fluid, and a chiller (had the good fortune to meet him)
Shortboarding in and of itself ISN'T about mainstream, or atleast it wasn't. But whats mainstream atm IS shortboarding, so its annoying. Most of the stuff on the surface is rails and ollying sets, which is ba-hoooring. Your right, look a little closer, scratch the surface a bit, and you'll find amazing stuff. And alot of people like to be cool by denying the "mainstream" but so what, thats what always happens.

Oh, it was a joke! Sweet haha. Sorry, lol. A lot of people wouldn't be joking about that, and that kinda pisses me off. I guess then what I said is for everyone who isn't joking.
I never said you didn't know who Mullen is...Even though I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of the people insulting shortboarding didn't. He's not even a good example anyway, because he's in his own little corner of skateboarding...Not the mainstream anyway.
I say...So what if it's the mainstream? That's just because it's awesome. Longboarding will be mainstream too at some point, because it's also awesome. The only problem with something being mainstream is all the people who just do it to be cool...So, either ignore them, or go for a skate with them, throw it down, show them what it's about, give them some stoke......And you made a new, hardcore skater. Can't get mad at people for doing and thinking that something is cool when it IS cool.
Also, about rails and sets being boring......True, that is only one facet of skateboarding, but the next guy might not think that's boring. I don't think it's boring. Give me a rail and a 6 stair.....I could occupy myself for days...Weeks. 360 flip to nosegrind down a 13 stair rail just isn't boring to me. But, to each their own. What I'm saying is...It's not a question of the surface and what's inside, it's just different facets of skateboarding. Although that is what's on the surface at the moment, it's still awesome and incredibely gnarly to a lot of people.
Anyway.....I don't really understand the first post :P Pictures would help.

To answer your question: The foot you are moving [first] always goes in FRONT of the other leg as you move it. If you do a full-step, you will obviously bring the second foot behind the first leg to complete. If you 1/2-step and turn fakie, you are ready to start another 1/2-step. Remembering that should be easier than shortboarding.
Screw you guys, I'm goin home!

No dip$h!t, I just answered your question of: "i cant figgure out wether to put my left foot around the front or around the back of my right foot." The answer, since you missed it, is IN FRONT.
Screw you guys, I'm goin home!

So, basically you were just looking for a soapbox to stand on to push street skating on others?
The good times are killing me.

When you are "cross stepping", are your toes facing the same side of the board or are you simultaneously spinning so that the foot that is going into the front is facing the other side of the board? I normally consider cross stepping to be when your toes of both feet end up still pointing to the same side. But you're talking about riding "fakie" which I assume means you are spinning around and riding "switchfoot" stance. (it's not really "fakie" because the nose of your board is still in the front right?).
Regardless, just practice riding down the street standing only on one foot. And then do the other foot. And do it up near the nose and back in front of the rear trucks. Then you'll be able to cross over or spin around and not lose balance or control.
Have fun!

I didn't know you were blond, but that explains alot.
Just kidding!
Cross-stepping is hard at first, but it will open right up once you get the hang of it.
