    Default Art for Longboards/mags?

Hey! I registered here to figure out some stuff about longboarding in the rain/wet conditions, but I just realized that you guys have a magazine, and that I'm an artist!

So yeah, does anybody know if anyone's in the market for an artist?

You can see my work at Arthur Wang Art.

Yeah, I know my name means dick.

what medium is this stuff? i can't tell if its painted or digital. it has a good look to it, but I think most people will want specific board examples. if you're talking about shopping illustration work to companies or mags, its all about that portfolio and networking.

correct me if im wrong but in my eyes it looks like digital painting. Perhaps in Painter? bit it can be easily done in photoshop as well ^_^

and yeah it always about portfolio and who you know, get to talking to some people here on silverfish, im sure youll be able to come up with something.

your good man, now you just have to apply your self to designs. ( just to give you a heads up... most work for skate companies is contract freelance work, you will rarely get hired as an in house artist for a skateboard company, not enough demand for art. of course if you can maintain their website, marketing department and such its a completely different story.)

im there with ya man, id love to work with a company exclusively, as a payed salary type of deal, but its not likely unless they have a big art demand and custom art demand.

I have a great need for your expertise.

    Untitled Document

This is my website. As you can see, it's in its infancy. It was actually hand-coded by a complete amateur (me). I am busy with a million things, but if you're an up and coming artist, this may be your niche. I can't afford to pay the big bucks just yet, but I plan on getting large enough to sponsor riders.

If you are at all interested, send a PM my way. We are both longboarders, and this site is to further our sport. Ever designed a t-shirt? Logo?

I will also have a section for 'Longboard Art', which I will not be paying for, but posting anything that gets sent my way.

EDIT: Don't be fooled by how plain it is. I simply put that up there for people to know it exists. It's like a pre-beta version.

Photoshop it is! Painter gets real choppy/non responsive on my computer, though I really wanna learn it at some point if I can get a better rig.

I've tried a LOT of networking, though it's all been sci-fi/fantasy magazines and writers in that genre. This is pretty much the first time I've thought about doing art for boards cause, well, I've only recently gotten interested in longboarding. And yeah, everything I've done, including book covers, CD covers, interior art for mags, have all been freelance. It'd be awesome to get a permanent job, but I'm not counting on it.

So yeah, I pretty much posted cause i thought it'd be cool to do some longboard art. Maybe I could email Mark from MHS? He seems like a pretty cool guy.

And Steve, I'm gonna PM you in a sec.

You could probably set up shop here on SF

Something like offering to do custom graphic designs for people building their own boards or ordering from a company that does custom graphics (XVD?)

Highly unlikely that you could make a living doing it though.

    Yeah?

Where do I post stuff offering my services?

And yeah, I dont expect to make a living off of it. I mean, I'm still in college, and while I hope to make a living off of illustration someday, I'm not betting on it right now.

What do you think people would pay for a board design/illustration? Just to give you an idea of what I normally charge, I do novel covers for around $350 bucks, CD covers for $200+.

I would try the board building forum first, as they would probably have the most need for graphics, but I don't know if most people have great means for getting a computer graphic onto a board.

However, I can't imagine anyone paying more than $50 for a graphic =/
It wouldn't be mass produced like a novel cover or CD cover, just a one time unique thing.
I might be wrong though, I'm no art buff

Hey Arthur, your prices aren't unreasonable, it's just the fact that I am a struggling college student-- any money used by the website will be out of pocket. If somehow it starts generating revenue, I will definitely consider this route.

man... thats very very very cheap...

You gotta charge what you value your art at. if you dont value it for much then its all good, but dont charge less if you think your not getting your moneys worth.

there are no guidelines of course, each artist will name his price, thats just how it will always be, but when artist put themselves down beacuase they think that people wont pay a fair price for tehir work then you are only cheating yourself. ^_^

as it is with everything else. You get what you pay for.

well im young, so im not really as dependent on making money as some of the artists on the fish. i also make them get the paint/clear coat, whatever. i also have a ton of fun doing it.
just curious, what do you charge?

    lol.

that my friends is on a need to know basis ^_^ lol

but ill let this much known

depending on the use for the art, if its a company or a particular client, if they have funds or not, if they are a non profit org. and if they are reproducing the artwork. Rights to the work, royalties if not.

There is alot to take into consideration before you quote someone.

if your serious about being an artist, and even if your doing it for fun and are young why would you undercharge people? get your moneys worth. if the people im doing art for are my friends they normally know the value of the work already so we work something out, but very rarely do i do something free.

as the JOKER said and will never be said better in my opinion:

IF YOUR GOOD AT SOMETHING, NEVER DO IT FOR FREE.

    my suggestion...

read and learn. this is the book that opened my eyes.

    Thanks Bones.

What the Graphics Artist handbook says is, pretty much, charge between $500-$2000 dollars. A whole lot more (Xerox's new logo was.... 4 million dollars? I think?) if it's for a big company, and many times more of it's for different types of media. You know, if I paint something for a book, bam, $1500. If you use the same painting for a poster, give me another $1500 and 10% of your profits. If you use the same painting again for a bookmark, hand me another $1000 and 20% of those profits.

    Etc etc etc.

All in all, if you're not planning on making a career of it, or if you are but are just starting out, the prices they suggest charging are going to get you nowhere. If you're starting out, people won't hand you a big enough project to warrant a big charge. I mean, I've only been working 2 years, and compared to the vast majority of freelancers, I'm damn good. Still haven't gone past the $500 mark yet for book covers, and $600 is considered really low-rung, beginners pay.

Sometimes I feel like I oughtta give up illustration and just focus on industrial design.

Edit: Bones, your first post was about my art? Weeeerd.

when it comes to art, people assume it's of better quality if it costs more money. charge more money, get more business, rule of thumb.
