a metaphor for what's happening in skateboarding? or not...
found this at post advertising.com
intriguing...on a number of levels...
TV Advertising advertising about TV advertising so advertisers will advertise on TV But follow the money. They won't, anymore.
There’s an exceptionally lame TV ad campaign running in the UK at the moment for Thinkbox, the television marketing body for the main UK commercial broadcasters.
The scene: a shrink sits alongside a hypnotised patient, encouraging him to regress and express profound, moving memories. Guess what? He sings iconic ad jingles from the golden age of TV advertising, when ads used to work and when, back in the day, commercial television was valued higher than junkbonds. It’s almost funny, and the catchy slogans take me back, back to the days when we couldn’t avoid seeing commercials.

But, given a choice, I’d rather not have had permanently burned into my memory tunes like: “Nuts! Whole Hazel nuts! Cadbury’s take them and they cover them with chocolate!” Thankfully, we’ve all moved on. It’s a blessing that consumers don’t have to – and won’t - put up with interruptive tosh trying to burn slogans into our brains. We’re no longer passive. Like trying to find a use for a slide rule when PC’s arrived, all this campaign does is to remind us that mass market TV advertising is over.

yes, superpat, it is exactly what I am saying
continuously saying "skateboarding should be more about fun" while continuously supporting the same stuff that has been done for the last 20 years is not going to lead to change....or an upswing in bank balances...
I get this, many on this site get it....and yet, everyone else out there seems stupified.....

I don't know I spent the afternoon in my local skatepark and the thing I noticed was guys trying to learn something new, both tricks and lines. a half dozen of us were working a frontside grind on a freakish uphill grindable edge, I watched a guy get a lot closer to handplants than I was getting and another 2 guys trying to do layback grinds on the extension, I watched a sweet beanplant to fakie on a hip, and a powerful backside nosepick grind indy off. These guys were just having fun but then I'm on the east coast not socal

We are not less and possibly quite a bit more influenced by commercials than people were in the 1950's.
I'm sure everyone remembers the Bud "Wazzuuuup" commercial. I remember everyone I knew repeating this when it was out.

Although I haven't been able to follow the evolution of skateboarding for the past twenty odd years, I don't agree that skateboarding has been "the same stuff" for the past two decades. When did Mouse drop? Mid nineties? At the time, that video was regarded as top notch scotch. Now we've there are guys like Lutzka FS flipping 18 stairs, and Danny Way launching over the Great Wall of China. Really, "standard skateboarding" is slightly on the repetitive side, but the new kingpins in the mainstream scene are taking repetition to a standard that blankets what use to be huge with a shadow.
