Despite all the rah-rah cheerleading on this site I've come to the sad conclusion that longboarding getting so popular is NOT a good thing.

    I completely agree.
Longboarding getting big just increases the chances of getting busted. New laws restricting skateboarding in the streets and downhill might not be too far off.
YouTube doesn't help. People posting up every little thing they do and every spot they skate increases awareness of other skaters and the police. It's cool watching the skating on some of these spots but not worth losing the spot over. Be smart about what you post. You could end up in court like that one guy did.

I've been saying that for years. Those that can profit from it will exploit it until they've made all the money they can then move onto the next new trend.

i swear every time we get interviewed they pick the worst possible people to interview. such #### this is not good. and wtf he did not almost get hit by an oncoming car he was clearly miles from it. why show a bouncy ass loaded? how bout telling them how you really stop... by sliding... oh yeah forgot to mention that small detail that we can practically stop on a dime, much more important to say "sick" as many times possible. my god i hope this crap stays out of the U.S.

i'm sorry but that's not true i have been skating for say oh a year in half and i can stop on command by sliding. if you can't do that you shouldn't be riding roads that may require you to do so. you don't have to be a pro to know how to stop...

This is so ridiculous. hyping up the ignorant public on a slow news day for nothing important.

I will agree with them one two points: 1- it, in fact, IS inevitable that someone gets killed. I was working miniature golf yesterday (I work for a company that throws big parties) and a kid got his face split open by his little brother on accident. People longboarding on a road with cars is dangerous, and someone WILL die eventually. (however, they probably edited together the 10 second clips from each 5 minute video that actually had cars)
2- as stated before, safety equipment IS optional. what happens to my body is my problem, what are they gonna do next, outlaw tats and body piercings?

I understand peoples concern. but who would do a sport like this without knowing the risk. I am more worried about people that are inexperienced and pose a larger threat because they cant handle their board or wear protective gear.

I would love to ride that road, but I don't think it would be responsible to do it in those conditions. Just my 2c.
True as hell. NOT TO MENTION, this idiots were bombing hills on the wrong side of traffic. If they had stayed in the right lanes, it would've been safer. These guys were being pretty reckless.

It didnt help that they talked like stupid high schoolers, saying "sick" a hundred times and spouting out slogans like, "most fun you can have with your clothes on."

    Uhh... they're in Australia.
They drive on the LEFT side of the road, so they were in their correct lanes.

From my experience, DH has a much lower injury rate than more acceptable sports such as football or soccer, and a much lower mortality rate than other types of racing such as auto or motorcycle. Sometimes I think yeah it's true it's dangerous and illegal but then I remember that if a biker with no helmet were to do the same thing as a longboarder with leathers and a fullface no one would blink twice and that's really why it's bull.

Or what about a news story about how dangerous motorcycles are?

"Watch as these two-wheeled-daredevil narrowly misses oncoming traffic!"

*Cutscene to a guy on a motorcycle staying cautiously in his own lane... in fast-forward.*

I mean yeah right that would ever ####### happen.

    Or how about:

"Watch as rebel jaywalkers cross roads mere seconds before automotive disaster! And apparently... safety equipment is optional."

Journalists have a hard time these days. I'll give them that much for sure. It's unfortunate that we have to pay for it...
