the wheelbone...yes, this probably works, but that's exactly my point
soft trucks part deux...

review from aboutskateboarding.com
Wheelbone is a rubbery strap that hooks onto your skateboard, looping over it's wheels and holding them in place. This lets you practice ollying, and other tricks, without worrying ab out your wheels rolling and slipping. The Wheelbone is a great idea, and it should help skaters to practice their ollies more. There is a danger in using it too much, but as long as you use it wisely, the Wheelbone is a brilliant idea that should help most skaters learn to ollie faster, higher and more safely.
So what is a Wheelbone, exactly?
If you look at the picture, you'll get a better idea. Wheelbones are made from polyerethane, as one molded peice. You stretch each of the Wheelbone's four loops over your skateboard's wheels, and they pull tightly and hold the wheels in place. Then you can hop on your board, without worrying about it rolling. Each of the four loops that cover the wheels have little nubs on them to help provide more traction. The loops also have edges to help to keep them from sliding off of the wheels. It's all a pretty brilliant idea.
Wheelbone vs. Softrucks vs Balance Boards
There are several over ollie practice tools out there. My favorite has always been Softrucks - Softrucks are these rubbery things that you mount on your skateboard, in place of your trucks. Then you can practice ollies and flip tricks in the house, or on the pavement, without worrying about rolling away.
The bonus with Wheelbones is that you don't need a separate skateboard to use it. It just slips onto the skateboard that you ususaly use. you don't need any tools or anything!
Softrucks are softer, so if you are planning on trying to ollie on hardwood floors or linoleum, I would recommend Sotrucks first. However, the Wheelbone would work there too. It would just be heavier and louder! Balance boards are a completely different deal - Wheelbones don't help you practice balance. In fact, they do the opposite! Which brings me to my next point...
Wheelbones - The Danger of Addiction
Here's the only real problem with the Wheelbones, or Softrucks, or things like this - you can use them too much. It's easy to start practicing with it, and since you feel safe, you practice with it for a long time. Meanwhile, during that time, you can develop some bad habits...
Your balance, for example. If you practice for too long with your Wheelbone, you will probably develop some terrible balance habits. So it's important to remember to practice skateboarding normally more than you practice with the Wheelbone. Even just skating around the neighboorhood is good practice.
Another possible problem you can develop is that you will get a good high ollie with the Wheelbone on, but then you end up depending on it. Don't!
Finally, you can end up developing some bad habits within your ollie. You can depend on the board to not roll when you land on it. Or you can start putting weight in strange places, but you won't know it because the board doesn't roll away. ALL of these problems can be solved by simply using the Wheelbone in moderation. Use it some, and then go skate some. And as soon as you can, you should get out and try and ollie without it!
So Should You Buy a Wheelbone?
Wheelbone
Yeah, I think the Wheelbone is a great idea! Don't let me give you the impression that it's something you should avoid! Not at all. But make sure you use it wisely, as a tool to help you learn to skate on a rolling skateboard!
Even advanced skaters might want to give this Wheelbone a look - as a tool, it's a good thing to have around. Plus, you never know when you might want to practice but it's raining outside, or winter, or just a dirty, gravely kind of place you happen to be in... In all, I am very happy with the Wheelbone, and I would recommend it to anyone!

Is it cheaper than softrucks? I like Softrucks. They are fun. I'm not paying $40 for a set tho. I think my price point for something along those lines would be $20. I thought the Softrucks were a dumb idea until I started playing on a pair at a skate shop. That crap was fun.

won't it totally change the balance of the board for kickflips and such?

ITs an effort to focus on the trick, bypassing all effort to actually learn to ride. It provides instant recognition and feedback to be able to attempt to skate at the current "so-called" level.
Mall boarders need to be able to convey their prowess on a skateboard accessory, and this is the sure fire way to gain that confidence with their mallboarding peer group.
I am thinking the wheelbone needs to come with a pair tight jeans, and the signature pro model completes(pick one of the 17,000 to be really individualized with paint job of your choice).
they forgot to mention that it doubles as a thong and can help to hold up those TWS pamper pull-ups in a jiffy.
My comments represent a selfishly one sided 1970's skateboarder mindset, and do not reflect the current fashion-skate-lifestyle industry's views.

Or maybe it's just a dumb skateboard accessory for kids with different priorities than you. Have you considered going outside?

Re: the wheelbone...yes, this probably works, but that's exactly my point
What I did when my three boys started short boarding & HAD to learn the ollie.
take the spacers out from the wheels and crank down the axle nut to prevent the wheel from rolling, then as the learned stationary slowly loosened the wheel to let it roll some. Now my middle son can ollie a 45" dble kick longboard I made him.I still use that stupid truck lapper to go up curbs

i practiced my kickflips on a straw doormat. worked pretty well too.
if people want to use these things its fine with me. i think i would have bought something like that back then for practicing in my garage in the winter!

like someone said i always would just practice in the grass. either that or roll your wheels into a little crack in the driveway so they at least wouldn't move before you ollied.

It's just a good thing to dork around on during rainy days. Just cranking out ollies in the house without fear of shooting out and breaking the furniture.
