I think we have bowed to the tyranny of pay phones for long enough

A lot, actually.
I wasn't serious though, I was just saying that the point of rebellious "punk rock" destruction is (supposedly) to dismantle the mechanisms of oppression, not just break random sh!t.
Personally I am of the opinion that neither fashion nor politics are relevant to skateboarding, so whether this picture is trying to make a real anti-payphone statement or just look cool it's still lame.

No matter the intended purpose of the picture.. It remains to be disrespectful, unlawful, non productive and a total disregard for others.Maybe some little ole lady relied on that phone to call for a ride from the grocery.. If it aint your's ..leave it the hell alone.

We're definitely in full web discussion mode, what with all that is going on. Geez, I assume your last was tongue in cheek!
I'm with the big green guy above, maybe I don't need the facility because I have my cell phone, but Mrs. Smith might.
And to Dirty's point above. There is a difference btw vandalism and civic minded resistance. In one the act is the end, in the other the act is the start.
How about what has been going on in Iran recently? All sorts of folks not burning tires or buildings, but climbing on the roof at dusk and yelling Allu Akhbar to register their disenchantment of the election results? How much LESS weight would the actions carry if they were smashing phone booths?
Skate 'em if you got 'em,

Re: Sorry, but this is total horsesh*t...why promote vandalism SBC?
There's different kinds of vandalism. Some can be great fun, and maybe even worthwhile. Tagging, chalking, stickering, etc are fun, and most of the time don't hinder the use of things, and are completely reversible. Breaking things is the exact opposite.

How would you like it if people went around randomly breaking #### that you wanted to use, or taking your money (taxes to pay for public property...)? You'd get pissed. You sir, are an ass.

Not really. Tagging and so-on has to be cleaned up the same as that piece of glass had to be replaced. Your tax dollars go to pay for that sort of thing also. Probably took a repair guy 20 minutes to put a new window on that thing where a wall might take hours to clean off. That's less tax dollars for the new skatepark, and thanks to the taggers less people willing to fund the new skatepark.

While it does take money, and resources to fix, was anything really broken? Was anything rendered useless?
I understand the point you're making. I'm just trying to point out that there can be subtle differences, and other ways to make statements.

I'm not sure that I have ever read SBC, but my sense is that this is marketing...of the magazine...and they are trying to sell it with an attutide. Editorials and "parting shots" are opportunities for the magazines to advertise their purported core values that potential ad buyers and subscribers can compare to their own values and desired image. I don't know these people, but I can imagine a brainstorming session in a conference room to try to figure out how to boost falling subscriptions and dwindling ad revenue. "I know! Let's print a picture of some kid fucking something up with a skateboard! The shoe companies and pre-teen punks will love that!"

marketing, advertising, punk rock, rebellion and vandalism...whatever or wherever you wanna go with this, I am totally cool with
the very fact that we are discussing it and using humor and philosophy and getting into some really meaty discussion...well, that's the best part of this whole thing
I am tired, and have been for a long, long time of people telling me skateboarding has to be a certain way.
The one thing you won't see me doing is ####### #### up...or just randomly breaking #### for no reason. I #### #### up with words...

Well if it leaves something that needs to be replaced and cost money it is the same. I'm sure the payphone still worked with out the glass window also, so it's the same difference. Tagging just makes the area look like a ghetto, it doesn't get any point across to anyone or further any cause, and if you're in a town trying to get a council to fund a skatepark all this stuff hurts your cause. I understand being P.O.ed at society and the man and breaking/tagging/rearranging stuff because I did a lot of that when I was a teenager. I was a big prankster, and it was fun. But looking back with more smarts it was kinda stupid and pointless also.

I don't get bothered easily, so it's not really a meaningful question, but since you ask... The amount that I get bothered relates more to the vandals circumstances than anything else.
If an impoverished Ethiopian grandma snuck into the U.S., broke into my apartment, and smashed my toilet with her skateboard.. I would be completely stoked.. I'd put a picture of it in the next issue of my skate mag.
If it was some sadistic rich lawyer, I'd definitely be obligated to get some revenge.
In the phone booth case it's just some fleeting irrational destruction, by someone whose circumstances I can only guess at, that's only real effect is in peoples minds. If you look around, everything in an urban setting is designed to take this kind of abuse. It's just part of the city.
As far as taxes, I prefer living in bad neighborhoods.. The town Cannon described in Florida is my type of place. You can get away with anything and it's dirt cheap. I've had my car tires slashed and windows smashed occasionally, there's graffiti and garbage everywhere. It honestly doesn't bother me. Small price to pay to keep yuppies from buying all the real estate and turning it into condos.

Re: Sorry, but this is total horsesh*t...why promote vandalism SBC?
I must be looking at a different picture than you guys. Because it looks to my like the Phone is still in working order. Looks like the luxury box that was placed around the (almost obsolete) public service was damaged. Did you know that a lot of places don't have glass boxes on their phones. If an old lady needs to make a call then she can make her call.
Honestly the picture is beautiful. The glass caught as its shattering. Its ugly safety glass either. You can see every shard flying apart. I think its a metaphor for how fragile our lives our. That at any moment we could be broken and thrown out of place. How easily we can lose our selves in this dangerous world. Our lives are only held in place by the those around us. When some of us fall we all fall. We have a responsibility to stick together. Also the glass plane is ugly. Its boring and drab. Only in its destruction is it beautiful. Maybe we can only see the true beauty of our lives as they are falling apart. We can only truly appreciate our lives as they are shattered into a million pieces.
That kid is a genius.

But that isn't skateboarding. Skateboarding is not inherently "skate and destroy". That was, as you noted, marketing by a magazine. One that found itself in the position of being able to pretty much dictate how skateboarding should be marketed. Skateboarding has nothing to do with being "punk", with being an outcast from society, or being destructive, or any other way they try to market it. Skateboarding is about riding a skateboard. Anything else is about what YOU are, not what skateboarding is...
