I'm honestly curious, how does a young adult from the planned bedroom-community of 80%-white almost crime free Camarillo get such pure hate for the cops? Music? Movies/TV? Boredom? Tell me it was something more than a cop yelling at you for skateboarding down the street.
I mean, I think I still remember that whole teenage angst thing. Oh hell.. Go for it. Fight the power! Tell me how that works for you 5 years from now.
Bro, you must have forgot that it's trendy to hate to prove your a "Scene" skater. It's like going to Hot Topic and buying clothes to be METAL and BRUTALZZZ. Get with it and Escalate The Hate or go burn your boards and hang your head in shame. You're a disgrace to the movement man.
Let me edit here a sec to add on:

OK WillJ I'm sorry I was being harsh. I didn't give your a real chance to get your point across. You may be right. Explain to me what an "Actual Skater" is and how you can find the actual skaters Vs. the fakes in this thread? Also, please use a convincing argument. Something that makes us go, "hey this guy is right". Don't cut and paste something from another web site, don't throw your fist in the air and scream bloody murder for the cause. I am very interested in learning something.
Well, if you had a job that you had to go to every day, instead of sleeping on your friends couch and spending the entire day roaming around town begging for quarters to buy yourself a 99 cent cheeseburger so you could eat, you'd have time to talk on message boards and less time to spend skating.
Rob's a reputable skater. Telling Rob Carter to get a job is almost like telling any of the top ten downhill racers to get a job. Don't hate because you can't skate for a living.

Rob is pissed and sticking up for his friend unconditionally (admirable). His friend got gut level honest with a cop (equally admirable). The cop then did what was to be expected by any rational person. He asserted his authority. This is how these things almost invariably play out. I think we could all benefit from easing on the hate. Especially amongst ourselves. We share a common passion, do we not?
its not worth arguing on the internet, none of this will accomplish anything
i see no reason to bitch at each other for this BS
both were in the wrong, both messed up, shouldnt matter this much to you, and it definately isnt worth incoherent multiple paragraph posts will prove nothing. nothing.
Wow, can't believe this thread has gone down this path, what a disappointment some of you are. Thumper, why dont you be just a little more judgmental in this situation? Acid-tripping cali kids and beggin for change for cheesburgers? Where the hell do you get your impressions of SF and skaters? What are you doing on this forum anyways? Please put your skateboard down for good, and return to your local starbucks with your kids. F__In KOOK!
I realize my comment about the acid tripping cali people sounded like I was calling skateboarders names. But, I really wasn't. I was just joking about Cali dudes in general with a joking sound in my voice. If we were talking in person, you'd get that. But, it's sometimes hard to tell when people are joking or serious on a forum.
It goes down like this in my books
Cop - jackass, abused power, but could make up enough shlt that he would never get in trouble
Skater - stupid, should just walk away, but i have a hard time thinking that a handfull of us wouldn't do the same thing.
I just hate cops like this, don't they have anything better to do?
I'm not a fan of people abusing their authority, but I'm also not a fan of stupid people; this kid was an idiot. I know his ego was a little bruised after being have a cop poke fun at him, but you pick and choose your fights.
If this was a physical encounter with someone two or three times his size, do you think he would have started cussing, or pushing back? No, he'd get his ass kicked. The situation is similar.
The cop is probably in the wrong in various ways (but has the power to weasel his way out of whatever he did wrong), but the kid acted like an idiot and got what he deserved. Stupid people making stupid choices are already given way too much leeway.
okay i'm gonna say my final peace and leave this thread alone (at least for a few hours)
archaic skateboarding laws of the 60's and 70's should be overturned
and cops shouldn't abuse their power
but I'm starting to think that going to city town hall meetings in my evenings after work and fighting the good fight for making skateboarding legal is a futile ****ing waste of time, when I see all the little dipshits out there -- that for every 10 steps we make forward, they throw us 100 steps back. seeing vids like this makes me think --- **** you guys!! ---- many of you idiots here (and I also use idiot in the Dostoyevskian vein) don't even realize how much time and effort some "old guy" skaters spend to make things like skatepark planning come together, or soften the laws banning skateboarding. kids I've talked with in Seattle had NO idea how many years and meetings guys like Gareth Roe, Scott Shinn, Dan Hughes, and other skateboarding advocates and parents had been attending to put together 10-15 year comprehensive skatepark plans for the city of Seattle and surroundings.
there's a ton of ignorance on this thread about what you feel you're "entitled" to say to a cop versus the reality. and just a lot of stupidity that runs directly counter to "street smarts"-- I can only think that a good bunch of silverfishers are also silver-spooners that never got their asses handed to them even once in their life, whether by a bigger brother, a teacher, a cop, their parents, or a thug on the street teaching you a lesson for mouthing off at the wrong time.
i agree, screw that kid or any other that doesn't have the common decency or respect to not call an officer a "****ing dick" right to his face. i could care less how well he skates, if he's "core" or whatever. he ****ed up and doesn't need any defending by his buddies here. chalk this one up as a net loss for skateboarders. the cop gets some time off. the internet surfers get to debate the "lawfulness" of this in chat rooms using google as their legal advisor.
i'm not at all for cops who use unnecessary roughness, but I just hope skaters learn something from this.
so cheers (and **** off)
and if you think this stuff gets me pissed, listen to Mike!
The city I live in is Skateboard friendly. (longboard, shortboard, whatever) There are 2 skateparks and they are not there to keep skaters off the street either. I can think of only 3 places where there are "No Skateboarding" signs down town, and it's for good reason. Everywhere else is open game. I have cops wave at my friends and I when they pass by weather it's on the street, sidewalk or a parking area. The general bad attitude is so minimal around here and people are pretty respectful. There was 17 year old who started a petition for a skate park 2 years back and went around to local business owners and was able to raise a substantial amount of capitol to try and get a new park built. The city was so impressed that they not only covered the rest of the bill, they flew in a designer from Cali and gave the land for it. With that said, I also don't see jerky kids that think they know it all ruining it for the rest of us. You also don't show up as a noob to the sport and get treated like a jerk by the seasoned skaters either. They are happy to share the stoke and help out. What I do see in other places are people that think because they are good skaters or they are "fighting the power" because it's trendy, think they are "Keeping it real". As Chris Rock said. "Yeah real dumb". If every skater wanted to make a statement and get something changed they would turn the tables on the powers that be and swallow their pride and be polite and follow the rules. They would be nice to police officers. Kill them with kindness I say. (you can trash talk them when they are gone). Don't give them any reason to think bad about you. The same cops work the same beat a lot of the time. Once they get to know you it won't be so bad. Call the city hall and just ask where it is legal to skate and encourage as many skaters to meet in those areas as possible. Show that you are out there and doing the right thing. Alienate the people that don't want to fuel the stoke. I guarantee you will see a change over time. (I dunno, as stated above, maybe my long paragraphs are meaningless).
I have to agree with Killdozer. He's making very valid points. I've always grown up in places where the common attitude was "#### the Police", "Cops will beat you for anything", etc. and I've understood why. I get that some cops are assholes and love to abuse their power, but that's just as bad as saying you hate a certain race because one of them did something to you.
I've only been approached by a cop once. After hearing all these stories about cops being abusive I was obviously scared and didn't want to start anything from the first place. I couldn't as for a better cop to be stopped by. He came to my friends and I with a smile on his face and said, "You guys need to go somewhere else to skate. I know what it's like, I used to be a skateboarder. You guys should try the parking garage. It's better and no one will bother you guys." He left then we left. End of story. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

Thanks for posting. These are unfortunately the stories that usually go unreported.

Yeah, I was about to post and say I didn't know what a small-dicked (1.5 inches! Obviously, with such an exact number, someone likes to "meat gaze" at the urinals), ####### ass-hole I was until I read this thread... I'm not a cop, but I work for a security company with about a dozen or so officers and two supervisors under me. Unfortunately, the property I work at has a "no skating" policy... not that there's anything worth skating there anyway, unless you really like flatland stuff.
Usually when I approach someone with a skateboard, one of two things will happen: they will stop, I'll have a bit of conversation with them about what they're riding and how it compares with the short decks/trucks/wheels I used to like, I let them know that I unfortunately can't let them skate here because some kid's parents might sue after he hurts himself, yadda yadda, we part ways.
The other scenario is they scram, I follow them safely (not too hard in an SUV), and I yell out trick names to try to mess with their heads. "Nollie 180! Do a kickflip! Christ, do SOMETHING fun!" If that doesn't make them curious enough to stop, at least they're leaving anyway and I'm laughing at my own joke.
Really, most skateboarders -- from my perspective at work -- aren't dicks; now the roller bladers, those are a bunch of ####### douchebags.
I've dealt with way too many cops, and only one of them was a complete dick. All the rest were completely reasonable, especially if you just tell them the truth. I've gotten let off the hook completely for doing 84 in a 55 zone, just by telling the cop the complete and honest truth.
other than the "break your arm" comment, which the kid earned, that cop handled himself so professionally that I was amazed. It appears he was annoyed to even have to be called about something like skateboarding, and was going to let the kids go. Hell, i've heard cops bitch about being called out. One officer who came out when some friends and I were downhilling was actually upset that a resident wasted his time. This officer had no problem immediately stating his name and badge number. He's got full rights to decide that he's not cutting the kid a break, even if the kid hadn't started mouthing off. The kid got what he deserved, and is lucky to have had that particular officer dispatched. He could have showed up and just started citing people.
I've been riding these damn 4 wheel lean-to-steer things (skateboards?) since I was 8 years old. The bulk of that time was as a street skater. I've NEVER had a problem with the police so long as I treated them politely and left when I was asked to leave. I know if i'm skating somewhere illegal, and accept the risk of tickets or arrest if necessary. it's part of the game. The police have way more important things to worry about than skateboarders, like corrupt judges bonding out felony arrests. (Which is why one of my family members left the force- he busted a meth lab, and the judge let the guy out on bond, which is illegal for that type of crime. The suspect walked out of the court right past the arresting officer, who was screaming "WHO LET THIS GUY GO!?!?!". The bailiff said the judge bonded him out, which again, isn't legal for that type of crime. Of course, the suspect burned down the lab and fled the state)
mind you, yes I've seen plenty of the videos where the cop loses it, but this isn't one. this guy deserves a freaking medal for how well he handled the situation. If people would have STFU, it's likely nobody would have been arrested.
While I don't agree with the laws at times. They cop handled himself very professionally, mever calling the kids names, or using unprovoked force. By the charges being dropped in court, show's that the laws may be revised over time. We as skaters tend to stick up for one another and see things blindly.
The laws are the laws, and while it appears the cop would have let them skate off into the sunset, the ill mannered kid decided to call a calm and collected officer of the law names that another skater might have taken to the point of an ass whoopin'.
