Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
In the research I've been doing on the skating laws in various cities (Here), I have yet to come across a legally defined difference between a "longboard" and a "skateboard." They are (rightly so) considered to be the same. However in Saint Louis, Mo. They do differentiate between a board used for transportation and one used for tricks.
They're going to run into a problem with this eventually. Someone will come up with a schlongboard, and if they let that person into the club, there will be no way for enforcement officers to tell the difference. But it seems like it's a step forward for the students, so here's hoping they run the club well!

amazing....in 20 years from now, well, let's just say we'll remember "the way it USED to be"

Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
why should you (anyone) have to be in a club? just have a 4 wheel rule. if your feet are on the board, 4 wheels are on the ground. I know somewhere has that law.

Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
Ha, just this last week I found out UC Riverside is pushing for a ban on longboarding/skateboarding due to a pending lawsuit involving an injury on campus after I was trying to get space for Loaded to come here for the campus tour. I was jokingly thinking well you should have a skateboarding license to ride them on campus...but if it means the differene between no longboarding and some longboarding, the idea's not looking so bad. As stupid as regulating longboarding sounds, it might actually push people to learn and enjoy the sport instead of using it as a fashion symbol on campus and shooting the board into my shin after falling off when they could barely keep their balance in the first place.

Under their rules my shortboard with the 99a park wheels replaced with 78a 60mm NoSkools, is banned? It's a softer, quieter ride, and a seriously lightweight cruiser because its small -- an excellent commuter. 73a 62mm Cambrias are kick-ass commuter wheels for little shortboards and minis as well. Tons of guys on the Portland Pusher race series ride boards like this "cross country" across the city.
They should figure out if they're really scared of kicktails, or of hard noisy wheels, when they try to define what a skateboard is. My guess is its the latter.
A skateboard is a longboard with its long middle section chopped out.

Yeah, they should just institute a rule about keeping the board on the ground and requiring student ID. If someone sees you trying to do a trick it could be a simple penalty. Some people may just enjoy getting around on their short boards more. Guards can have the right to stop anyone and check for ID and that'll obviously cut down on off campus riders.
It doesn't seem like such a big deal to me.

Yep.

Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
If the campus is owned and maintained by the college.. well, they have the right to dictate what activities are permissible and that a student organization has taken actions to "police" themselves is a good learning tool and life lesson on how to organize and enforce themselves. I think it's a step in the right direction

Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
i used to go to school at DSC, so its great to hear this. even though i never needed a board to get to class on time, its a great campus to cruise at night, sweet mellow banks. and the quickest way to get to the skatepark is through campus, which is finally allowed.
all you have to do to get around the shortboard thing are ride boards with pointy noses, then only the most avid old school forum reader's will realize you ride more than some kind of "sick mini longboard that you cant ollie."

Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
:sniff, sniff: is that...fail I smell?
Good try on the part of the school, but, seriously? It look at ton of effort to allow skateboarding of any kind on my school's campus because we've had a few (yes, plural) deaths and serious head injuries resulting from skateboarding. The thing is, all of those injuries resulted from longboarding crashes, and there are plenty of riders on campus who use their standard skateboards as transportation too. I don't see anything but problems coming from trying to distinguish between standard skateboards and longboards.
Let's throw in some slalom boards, minis, and schlongs and see what happens.
I worked with the alternative transportation director and managed to help push along a new policy that now allows skateboarding on campus with a few catches and requirements:
1.) All 4 wheels must remain on the ground at all times
Honestly, there's little to no way to enforce this rule and I'm pretty sure the school is well aware of that. However, simply putting the rule in makes it possible for the school to charge skaters with vandalism and protect their own backs if anyone falls while doing any trick skating.
2.) Skateboarding on the roadways is forbidden
Not my idea and I completely disagree with the rationale behind implementing this rule. The basis is that we are both a danger to ourselves and a liability risk to drivers/the school if we are involved in an accident with a car. The problem is that 99.9% of riders on campus lack the ability to control their boards on crowded sidewalks and the sidewalks run parallel to the steep roads. By limiting us to the sidewalk, you put pedestrians in danger and we are still going to need to cross the road quite often...not to mention you seriously limit the most effective stopping method we have for those riders who are able to slide.

Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
That kind of sucks to hear, although its sort of how it is hear. You can commute on any kind of board, street setup or w/e, but you're not supposed to do any "stunts". I was cited before for using my board for "exhibition purposes"...
I still street skate on campus, just keep moving and occasionally duck from the cops... I'd rather that than give into their little rules.

Or you could not be a pussy and skate whatever you want, wherever you want. Campus security is really not that hard to outrun/outsmart.

Re: Campus boarding requires certication, Shortboarding banned
Isn't a longboard just a LONGskateboard.
Last time I checked they were the same thing.
You can ride small soft wheels on a shortboard and use it for transportation. Not to mention the whole "you have to be apart of the club to longboard here" thing, just doesn't sit right with me. Kinda messed up to those people who are learning though, because I highly doubt they will pass the test to get their "license"
