Re: so guess which longboarding company has a DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD in Transworld Skateb
You can't duplicate quality and stoke... the leaders are destined to be smaller, better, more sought after and technically ahead of the curve... I don't see that in any of these products.
We set the standards... they fill the average masses niche8)

You and I both know that the target for the Element board is not the LDP/slalom rider, tech slider, or DH'er. The target market (aka, "real world") is the shop that wants one-stop-shopping so that they can get longboards and shortboards from one source.
The most truth I've seen in a long time... It will be interesting to see if shops pick up on these imitation boards or stick with something more specialized.

Just to play on the words a little bit. That is an incorrect statement. The leaders are not "destined" to be smaller... and technically ahead of the curve. That indicates some sort of ability bestowed on them by the market, and gives the mainstream market more credit than it is due.. There is no "destiny" involved. By definition, in the mainstream/mass market, the leaders will be smaller more specialized, therefore ahead of the curve. Even if the products are a rehash, they will actually understand the product and the engineering. Leaders are not influenced by the mainstream. Mainstream is influenced by the leaders. Mainstream is about manufacturability, cost per unit, etc etc. Specialty sector is about form fit and function. The mainstream can make a product equal, but they cannot make a product better. Why? becuase the mainstream has no innovation capability, only duplication. And when they have no design/engineering background, they lose much of the form, fit, function aspect. IT looks right, but it does not quite perform as it should.
When the specialty market becomes stagnant, the mainstream catches up, then the specialty market and mainstream are the same, as in the case of popsicle stick skateboard. Mainstream is about duplication and selling a "looks like product". This is why it is so critical that the mainstream sell soft goods. Becuase they can define a market "style". In this case, you can even dress like a skater, for whatever reason! Since they can not innovate, they make the parent product into an accessory for an image. the mainstream can paint things and add pattern, which lends incredibly well into the softgood market, and guess what else? board graphics. Differentiation based on appearance, not on function.

My comments represent a selfishly one sided 1970's skateboarder mindset, and do not reflect the current fashion-skate-lifestyle industry's views.

exactly, there is not one flexy deck, square-lipped wheel or reverse-kingpinned truck in that photo.
