The decks themselves aren't bad, but the completes are "lacking" when it comes to the components. I like the boards' shapes & construction, but someone needs understand that these boards would really benefit from some larger wheel wells.

Indeed, I like the retro vibe of the decks - but it would be nice if they were a little more performance oriented as well.

    Why do you read transworld?
    Longboard-Sessions.co.uk - UK Longboarding

    Canterballs-Longboarding.co.uk - Shredding near Canterbury

DangerousDecks.co.uk - lifting the gloom from an increasingly restricted, post finacial-apocalypse Britain

most likely to keep an eye on competition in a similar market..

there is a reason that vast majority of new release information comes from his posts.

Does this mean that Zumiez will finally carry more than one brand of longboards?

Seriously, though...I have to wonder who at Element designed/tested these boards? I know they are a massive company but are any of their riders any good at downhill, sliding, LDP/slalom?

When I look at these boards I see the product of some guy in a suit saying, "The longboard market is blowing up. We've got to get in ASAP"

I can't help but feel like the mainstream skate industry still doesn't think of these disciplines as legitimate forms of skating, but they are beginning to see big wheels and odd-shaped decks as a legitimate way of making money.
Silverfish is not the real world. Those sub-disciplines are of zero concern to a company like Element (read: Billabong). These boards are safe shapes that are designed to appeal to the traditional shortboard market because everyone knows that the S9's are for "those longboard f@gs."

    MHM,

you wrote that silverfish is not the real world...
I would argue that it is indeed a real world...perhaps about as real as you can get in skateboarding.

it's taken a LONG time for the other parts of skateboarding to finally "get it"....but slowly, things are changing....mass market, here we come!

"A" real world is not "THE" real world.

You and I both know that the target for the Element board is not the LDP/slalom rider, tech slider, or DH'er. The target market (aka, "real world") is the shop that wants one-stop-shopping so that they can get longboards and shortboards from one source.

Silverfish is not be the real world, but I think silverfish is a few years ahead of the real world. Street & park skating are losing their monopoly on what is considered "skateboarding". Even longboard-haters are being exposed to stylish and challenging ways of riding that require a different kind of board, and there are more and more people who can skate both tranny and hills. What this tells me is that aggressive skaters are gradually letting go of the notion that a longboard is just a poser's imitation of a skateboard and coming to the realization that the distinction in skateboarding is not between longboarders and shortboarders, but between people push the limits of skill and safety and people who don't. The result of this, I predict, is that aggressive skaters (the first type) will start crossing over into different disciplines and buying different types of gear (not element's basic commuting boards but specialized, performance-oriented boards) and non-aggressive skaters will continue doing stationary ollies in their garage and/or pushing their element cruisers around campus (nothing wrong with this).

Mark is right in that Element's target market is not tech sliders or speedboarders, but I do not think these markets are of "zero concern" to element. And if they are now, the time is coming soon when they won't be, and a cynical ploy to sell sub-par longboards to lazy shop owners won't be enough.

That being said, it will probably take a longboarding video game to really set it off.

I've actually ridden and sold these boards, and fitting them with wheels larger than, say, 60mm was a challenge.

three years ago, I admit, I thought longboards/longboarding was gay as hell. I HATED longboarders.

Now... I haven't skated park/tranny since last summer!

This website has converted me. I lurked and just soaked up info for a longtime before I ever posted.
I have a bunch of skateboards

Isn't this what you're supposed to put in a signature?
