Re: are banner ads effective?
If it's something that catches my interest, sure. Happens rarely, though. Only thing I'd click on at present is some insane sale or the release of the EW Mini-Glider. Definitely picking me up one-a-dems.

Re: are banner ads effective?
According to a nice web usability book I've been reading... (embarrassingly can't remember the author), the more you use the internet, the more you get used to filtering things out while you scan the page for relevent information. So most experienced users completely filter any kind of banner ad shaped object. This can even be detrimental to site usability, if you create something that's not a banner ad, but make it shaped like one, many users will simply filter it out and not register it at all, even if it's important to your sites usability. Wild!
I have an adblocker and a stylsheet plugin so my fish is purely black and white text with images that are only 10px wide 10px high unless you hover over them to see what they are, same with video.
I don't see ANYTHING. hahaha

I believe it has been proven that your eye will start to avoid web banners, especially animated/moving ones and start searching for the content you are really looking for. Again I don't know the study, but my Creative Director and I have discussed this when designing web ads. The ones that catch my eye offer discounts .

I was meaning to get it for a while, the new ads here were the final motivator.

Re: are banner ads effective?
I purchase 99% of longboard products online, and 99% of those purchases have been through links provided by SF banner ads. Only exception is the used gear purchased from the SF Classifieds.

Re: are banner ads effective?
I rarely click on banners anywhere, but I do have to say that I love watching what comes up when you click on a whack thread here. It is great to see those marketing minds at work.
Skate 'em if you got 'em,
