Re: another candidate for douchebag of the year...
Where I live, there never used to be a specific wording for skateboarding law so they could just hassle you for whatever they felt was good that day. Recently a law was passed stating no skateboards, bicycles, etc.. on the sidewalks (street is fine though). This is an instance of banning that I think actually helped things because no we all know what we can get in trouble for.
I live in Springfield, MO btw

Re: another candidate for douchebag of the year...
i wrote this guy a letter-
IF YOU DONT AGREE WITH ME, IM SORRY
please dont give me any #### for something you dont agree with, but here it is. i hope to post any reply he sends me/us
Dear Joseph-
I am very sorry to hear of your opinion about skateboarders in the article titled "Skateboarding should be a crime on SCSU." I myself am a 'skater,' and your letter offended me greatly, many skateboarders (including myself) would like to write you a very rude letter full of various insults displaying the ignorance of your letter. However, I know that writing a rude letter is not the answer to anything, so I will address the errors of your statements.
First off, the type of skateboards you referenced are not called 'banana boards,' the correct term is 'longboard.' longboards are essentially a skateboard used for commuting, cruising, or downhill racing, and to me it sounds like the people skating on your campus were longboarders. (For more information on longboarding, please look up silverfishlongboading.com.) As for your comment about longboarders looking like "kids dressing like they came right out the movie “Dog Town and Z-Boys”," I do not know why the personal appearance of anybody should affect your feelings towards them. Also, skateboards have been around since the 1950's, although they may have become popularized around the 1970's.
Being a longboarder myself, I know how much fun it is to cruise around on a campus. You pointed out that "if students can’t walk the three or four blocks to school who don’t suffer from a debilitating handicap, then they are just lazy." I would say that longboarding provides almost as good of a work out as a walk, and it is fast and convenient. Longboarding can be very useful for commuting or hurrying to a class that you might be late for. Although some longboarders might be rude, many of us are actually polite when it comes to the sidewalk or street "right of way." I myself always skate in the street to leave the sidewalk clear, and slow down and move to the side or "dismount" my board when I am using the sidewalk and a pedestrian comes along. It may surprise you that longboarders are most likely legally considered a pedestrian in your state. Although I do agree that anyone can be rude, (especially ignorant longboarders,) people should not come down hard on one group of people unless they truly understand the culture they deface to its deepest. This being said, I DO think that longboarders have a right to be on the sidewalk, as long as they give pedestrians the right of way and are able to control their board decently (and be polite.)
Longboarding on campus should not be a crime. If longboarders are not being polite, and are barging through crowds in a dangerous fashion, perhaps your campus needs some rules about where to walk and where to longboard; maybe the school could paint longboard/bike lanes on wide pathways so that pedestrians have a more "peaceful" space to walk. I did think your job on "training" bike and longboard riders the rules of the sidewalk, that would be a much better option than threatening to throw marbles* under longboard wheels. I also wonder why you think that creating a hovering longboard would be a solution to the problems mentioned in your article.
I am truly sorry that you think so poorly of longboarders, and equally sorry that longboarders in your area cannot respect the others around them. I am sorry that you feel as if I am the bane of your existence and a terrorist. Although nobody is perfect, I (speaking on behalf of all longboarders) apologize for what has happened to you, and hope that those "lazy hipsters" have disrespected you in such a manner as to make you aggravated enough to write such an angry letter. On behalf of longboarders, I think you do owe us an apology, and I think you owe it to yourself to maybe borrow or purchase a longboard, we don't use them only for commuting, and they are REALLY fun. Thank you for your time, I hope this letter was able to help you open your mind a little bit
-Jeffrey S. and Longboarders everywhere
*many longboarders have read this on an online longboarding forum called silverfish, there is a "thread" about the article you wrote, and I think you should read the comments and opinions left by global longboarders, I would encourage you to read this, but I would also like to warn you that many of these comments were vulgar, and I would like you to imagine how you would feel if someone wrote an article about college students in the form you have written this article so that you understand where some of the ruder comments have come from http://www.silverfishlongboarding.co...ebag-year.html
** I am going to post this letter in the forum, and depending on the nature of your reply (if any) I would like to post that as well, so you might want to keep that in mind when writing it, address it to ‘Longboarders’ if you decide to reply
thanks again - Longboarders

Hmm! Do you think that if your large group of people got off the sidewalk and onto the grass or even stopped to chat in one of the many campus gathering areas the moving public (of any kind) would not expect you to move out of the $$%%?& way?
This guy is a definite candidate for the no helmet crew!

He looks like the kind of guy who wished he could skate but was too fat as a child to do so, and now as a messed up virgin (probably) has a hatred for people doing what he couldn't do.
